BWXT's Nuclear Operations Group - Lynchburg is currently seeking a Fire Protection Engineer for its Industrial Health and Safety Unit in Lynchburg, VA location!
As a Fire Protection Engineer you will be performing technical evaluations associated with new facility equipment and modifications, conducting routine compliance audits, inspections, and assessments of existing plant conditions. These technical evaluations will include risk assessments and Process Hazard Analysis methodologies such as Event Tree Analysis, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis, or What-If assessments.
Essential Functions/Responsibilities:
- Evaluates facility modifications to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and standards.
- Conducts studies and surveys on general plant safety and facility needs as required by OSHA regulations and keeping with established safety work practices.
- Performs written reports, technical documents and compliance reviews, and initiates appropriate corrective actions and improvement suggestions to mitigate and abate regulatory deficiencies.
- Collaborates across facility departments to ensure equipment and processes are being maintained and hazardous conditions are corrected.
- Participates in project development, reviewing design drawings for new construction, renovations and modifications to ensure compliance with code and design requirements.
- Reviews and analyzes proposed fire & life safety features to ensure compliance with design requirements and applicable codes/standards.
- Serves as the Subject Matter Expert and representative of the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) with respect to fire protection and life safety activities.
- Facilitates compliance programs to ensure all Federal and State Safety and Health Regulations are maintained.
- Participates in Emergency Team training exercises and facility drills and emergency events.
- Prepares and issues written and verbal reports to management summarizing findings, recommendations, and corrective actions.
- Provides technical support to line management regarding the implementation of company procedures and safety requirements and principles.
- Provides leadership and consultation to coworkers, and supports Environment Safety and Health Management.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in an applicable engineering/science field is required. A Fire Protection Engineering degree or technical experience in Fire Protection is preferred.
- Must possess at least two (2) years of related work experience preferably in an industrial setting.
- Must have working knowledge of water-based suppression systems, gaseous suppression systems, fire alarm/detection systems and passive fire protection features.
- Must understand inspection, testing, and maintenance of fire protection systems, equipment and features.
- Must possess working knowledge of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Codes/Standards, International Building & Fire Codes, and OSHA 29CFR1910 General Industry Regulations and Standards.
- Must be able to demonstrate superior written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills and successfully resolve conflict.
- Must have keen attention to detail and demonstrate the ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Must be able to work in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
- Must have demonstrable knowledge of regulatory compliance and understand the importance of maintaining accurate documentation.
- Must be able to read and understand schematics and flow diagrams.
- Ability to prioritize and execute tasks, with a high degree of accuracy, in a rapidly changing environment is required.
- Must be a US Citizen with no dual citizenship.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) clearance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in Fire Protection and/or Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) is preferred.
- Emergency response/fire suppression experience/qualifications are preferred.
