Job Summary:
Provides technical expertise as a senior simulator engineer in one of three areas:
- Simulator software engineer - Simulator software engineers will concentrate on application of engineering principles for mathematical modeling of physical systems and use of numerical methods for coding the model using an advanced programming language such as Fortran or C.
- Simulator hardware engineer - Simulator hardware engineers concentrate on digital and analog design relating to simulator maintenance and modifications including the instrumentation and controls of the simulator panels, the input/output (I/O) system and the computer hardware architecture.
- Simulator configuration management and testing engineer. Simulator configuration management engineers have simila assignments as simulator software engineers but will also complete simulator testing and documentation methods for meeting simulator regulatory requirements.
- As a fully competent simulator engineer in all conventional experience aspects, conducts work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection and adaptation of standard problem solving techniques and the application of system procedures and criteria.
- Devises new approaches to problems encountered.
- Develops solutions and engineering options on a wide range of simulator maintenance and modification issues requiring a broad knowledge of simulator engineering practices and nuclear power plant operation and design.
- Works independently in all phases of simulator engineering work in a part of a major project or in a total project of moderate scope.
- May direct or coordinate the work of other simulator engineers, technicians, senior instrument mechanics and others who assist in specific assignments
Supervision Received:
Independently performs most assignments with instructions as to scope, priorities and deadlines. Receives technical guidance on unusual or complex problems with the specialist or principal engineer's approval on proposed plans for projects and assignments.
Skills and Proficiencies:
Real time modeling and software engineering; Digital and analog hardware design; Simulation configuration management and testing; Software/system documentation; Advanced programming language, e.g., Fortran or C; Interfacing computer hardware and plant equipment.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience/Certificates, Licenses, and Registration Requirements/Other Requirements:
- B.S. Degree in mechanical, nuclear, electrical, computer or chemical engineering from an accredited curriculum with emphasis on thermodynamics and fluid flow and/or digital and analog hardware design. A Masters' Degree is desirable.
- Requires sufficient years of professional experience to ensure competence as a fully trained engineer. Computer programming skills in the area of software development, database management and numerical methods are desirable.
- Membership in professional and technical societies including utility user's groups and computer simulation society groups is desirable.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain unescorted nuclear plant access and S-3 and S-4 medical qualifications when applicable.
- Must be willing and medically able to work rotating shifts and maximum overtime permitted by TVAN procedures during peak periods.
- Must be able and willing to travel to plant locations as required when performing assigned tasks and, as necessary, to be temporarily assigned to a field location.
