ABOUT THE ROLE
TransAlta is currently recruiting for a Renewables Engineer to join our Engineering & Technical Services group which is within our fleet wide Asset Management team. The role will play a critical function in asset management optimizing the performance, reliability, efficiency, and risk profile of existing and future renewable power generation assets. The successful candidate will work with our Engineering, Operations, Growth, and Construction teams to support existing and future wind, solar, hydro, and BESS plants across TransAlta's fleet in Canada, the United States, and Australia. This centralized specialist engineering role provides strategic support to the distributed plant engineering teams across the TransAlta fleet and will focus primarily on wind generating unit components including foundations, blades, towers and drivetrains, and will be expected to have or develop knowledge applicable to solar, BESS, and hydro.
This is a full-time salaried role based out of our Head Office in Downtown Calgary, with the flexibility for a hybrid work schedule consistent with TransAlta's Hybrid work policy (currently core office days T/W/Th with up to two weeks of summer remote work'). Domestic and international travel to plant and vendor sites as needed.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
- Provide expert level advice and technical leadership across operational and growth engineering teams. Includes providing technical input and quality assurance guidance across the asset lifecycle including procurement, manufacturing, testing, compliance, maintenance, and operation.

Identify, communicate, and recommend mitigation of enterprise risks which are related to engineering practices, standards, procurement, maintenance, testing and operations.

Create, implement, manage, and audit related equipment engineering standards and specifications in support of the overall engineering governance program. Includes monitoring industry practice in engineering, reliability, compliance, and technology to establish minimum requirements and technical guidance.

Implement or manage fleet-wide asset health and monitoring strategies.

Provide expert technical input into equipment failure investigations and into the asset management process to ensure risk and condition assessments inform asset strategies. Lead root cause failure assessment and develop repair / mitigation strategies

Provide specialized resources to perform technical assessments and due diligence assessments of growth investment opportunities to business development.

Establish and maintain a network of peers to monitor industry practices in engineering, reliability, compliance, and any developments in technology that provide opportunities to improve business results.

Discharge technical work proactively and autonomously, with minimal direct input from Manager or peers to assist with the resolution of technical issues.

Engage and collaborate with other TransAlta teams when necessary to assist with resolution of asset issues.

Manage external engineering contracts and/or consultants as required.

Communicate lessons learned and best practices among the field-based engineering teams.

Travel and flexible work hours are required to support the position accountabilities.
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

Bachelor's or Master's degree in engineering (Mechanical or Wind-related field preferred).

Registered, or eligible for registration, with APEGA (Alberta) as a Professional Engineer (PEng). The ability to be registered with OIQ (Québec) would be considered an asset.

A minimum of 10 years of direct experience in engineering and asset management of utility scale renewables projects (new installations, commissioning, operations, and/or maintenance).

Previous engineering experience supporting operating plants in the Renewables sector.

Demonstrated expert level of technical knowledge with the capability to solve unique and complex technical issues with innovative ideas.

Ability to quickly understand complex technical issues and articulate them to both a technical and non-technical audience.

Knowledge, interpretation, and application of applicable codes and standards applicable to renewable energy projects.

Knowledge of asset management concepts, business risk assessment processes, and equipment condition assessment methods.

Familiarity with predictive maintenance techniques, condition monitoring systems, and asset performance monitoring tools.

Ability to work independently to organize, plan, coordinate, and manage multiple tasks simultaneously including providing field support.

Ability to work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders in order to understand the full breadth of technical issues and foster consensus between the stakeholders to recommend engineering solutions.

Proficient in core office programs (i.e.: MS Teams, SharePoint, MS office) and capable of learning key position specific applications.

Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively convey complex topics collaborate with cross-functional teams, and present findings/recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders at all levels of the organization.

Demonstrated ability to build trust in relationships with internal and external counterparts including customers, vendors, and other project stakeholders
