As an Engineer at Toronto Hydro, you will play a pivotal role in developing and implementing innovative solutions across various aspects of utility operations. WORK ILLUSTRATION:
Reporting to a Manager, the incumbent provides a wide range of technical services for internal and external customers, which confirm technical soundness, reliability, safety and cost effectiveness of the utility. An Engineer is accountable and legally responsible to prepare, review and sign/stamp engineering drawings, calculations, standards, technical specifications etc.
The incumbent participates in short and long-term strategic planning on technical matters; prepares engineering reports and studies; performs analysis and evaluations; provides timely technical support/consultation, project management and testing; develops proposals and plans; prepares and/or reviews methods, procedures (process re-engineering), and designs.
The incumbent is expected to behave ethically and follow the established code of business conduct, policies and internal control procedures, laws and regulations governing Toronto Hydro.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prepares engineering, technical or business reports and studies; performs analysis and prepares plans for station and distribution system performance improvements. Participates in short and long-range strategic planning for maintenance activities.
- Provides timely technical support and consultation, demonstrates effective project management and process efficiencies; reviews, develops and/or presents business proposals, plans, designs, processes, operational procedures and practices.
- Accountable for the timely, technically accurate and cost-effective application of engineering practices.
- Compares alternatives based on cost/benefit considerations, customer needs, safety, statistical analysis, and engineering principles, and recommends the optimum solution.
- Undertakes and/or participates in special investigation and studies, and prepares reports with recommendations.
- Supports the preparation of material and/or technical specifications and standards; reviews proposals from suppliers, contractors and consultants for technical merit and compliance; investigates and evaluates the application of new technologies.
- Reviews codes, standards, guidelines, long term energy policies, and conduct benchmarking studies
- Supports grid modernization, electrification, and utility of the future initiatives through innovation and adoption of new technologies
- Participates in implementing corporate goals and objectives.
- Represents Toronto Hydro in external meetings and/or committees.
- May be called upon to act as a team or project leader.
- Performs root cause analyses of failure data
- Performs trend analyses of equipment data and determines appropriate actions to improve and optimize capital and operations programs.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Registered as a Professional Engineer in the province of Ontario.
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Electrical preferred. Consideration to other disciplines such as Civil and Mechanical.
- Minimum four (4) years of relevant engineering experience in planning, design, analysis and construction.
- Experience in data management and analysis preferred.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Effective skills in project management operations, budgeting, process and productivity improvements.
- Self-motivated, operates with a high degree of independence and can visualize opportunities.
- Aptitude and experience in adapting to, managing and facilitating change, willing to challenge the status quo.
