Introductory Statement. This classification shall be open only to completely qualified and experienced personnel. Judgment as to qualification and experience shall be solely at the discretion of the Company. In the event of a vacancy, the promotion of an employee to this classification shall be solely at the discretion of the Company.
In the event an employee in this classification is unable to remain qualified as required to perform welding, the employee shall revert to Pipe Fitter and Repairman - Class C.
General Purpose of Work. Performs under general supervision, various construction, operation, and maintenance functions in the Gas Distribution Department.
General Duties. Performs the work of Pipe Layer - Gas Distribution Department. Installs routine gas services, taps and bags gas mains, and pumps manholes. Performs other incidental and related duties as assigned.
Welding Duties. Performs assigned welding work which may include but not be limited to installation of gas service tees, butt welds of pipe of any diameter, fabrication of meter connections, fabrication of regulator or valve piping and any related facilities. Performs assigned maintenance and repair welding on any gas distribution facilities. Work may be required on pressured or unpressured gas distribution facilities.
Qualifications. One year's experience as a Pipe Layer and demonstration of suitable proficiency in that classification or equivalent training or experience satisfactory to the Company is required. Must have demonstrated satisfactory aptitude and learning ability for the duties of gas distribution construction, operation, and maintenance. Must have and keep a Wisconsin driver's license. Must have the stamina to work outdoors under extreme weather conditions. Must have a temperament and personality which enable the employee to work as a member of a crew or work team. Must be reasonably available for overtime and emergency work assignments. Must learn or have learned and practice all safety rules which apply to the work, including the use of all special protective equipment used in this type of work.
Must qualify and retain qualification as a welder in accordance with the requirements of the Madison Gas and Electric Company Gas Distribution Department welder qualification procedures, which shall conform to Part 192, Chapter 1, of Title 49, Code of Federal Regulations; the Wisconsin Administrative Code - Chapter PSC 135; and the latest edition of the American Petroleum Institute Standard API 1104 adopted by the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin.
Knowledge and Skills to be Acquired. Demonstrates a good knowledge of the Company's gas distribution system, equipment, and apparatus. Acquires and demonstrates leadership ability, initiative, work planning, and organization. Demonstrates increased ability to perform routine pipe fitting. Acquires and demonstrates the ability to operate Line Stopping equipment. Demonstrates a good knowledge of the Company's service area. Acquires and demonstrates the ability to read gas maps, prepare field sketches, and make out time and material records. Acquires and demonstrates the ability to operate and perform routine maintenance on Company excavating equipment. Acquires increased knowledge of applicable codes, ordinances, and Company rules and standards which apply.
