Description

Job Summary:

This position provides leadership, necessary support, and tools for industrial health and safety programs within a power generating facility. This position is also responsible for ensuring the safety and health programs are effectively integrated into and aligned with the overall business strategy.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Plans, directs, and manages the safety programs and policies under senior management direction.
  • Manages all safety related activities associated with subcontracting of vendors for services and equipment.
  • Reviews and incorporates, as appropriate, safety and health standards originated by OSHA.
  • Must keep fully informed on all existing and proposed changes in OSHA regulations, protective equipment requirements and site permit related requirements.
  • Conducts audits of safety programs at the facility and identifies and controls loss producing exposures.
  • Conducts investigations of accidents at the operating site.
  • Evaluates performances of program activities and provides summary report to plant management.
  • Develops and implements record keeping and investigation procedures for occupational injuries and illness.
  • Develops and conducts emergency preparedness and safety training programs.
  • Responsible for making recommendations and presentations to plant management based on accepted safety methodology.
  • Develops and evaluates personnel within the scope of the job responsibility.
  • Maintain personal technical expertise in applicable safety legislation, regulation, technology, and controls.
  • Organize work of personnel within functional area to maximize effective use of resources.
  • Make decisions regarding appropriate division of day-to-day work among NRG staff and consultant resources.
  • Be accountable for results in a specific functional area, including the work of all employees in the functional area organization.
  • Foster a work environment in which employees are provided with challenges, development opportunities, and the tools and resources to be successful.
  • Manages activities and provides leadership direction to management, professional, technical and support personnel of the unit.
  • Work with the established teams and processes to support, facilitate and supplement existing regional and plant compliance efforts.

Working Conditions:

  • Normal office environment and/or outdoor work environment. (Including working at heights, high/low ambient temperatures, and high humidity areas at generating unit work locations).
  • Work overtime and non-standard hours as required.
  • Requires occasional travel outside the business area.
  • Requires wearing personal protective safety equipment (respirators, safety glasses, hard hat, protective footwear, ear plugs, etc.)
  • Will required to work around rotating and energized equipment, hazardous materials, and chemicals.

Minimum Requirements:          

  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Health and Safety (IH&S) or related discipline from an accredited college or university

AND

  • and 5 years' experience working in an industrial facility in an IH&S capacity.

OR

  • A high school diploma and a minimum of 15 years FTE Safety in an industrial safety environment and Certificate(s) from a recognized organization like the National Safety Council.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A minimum of ten (10) years of relevant power generation industry experience, five (5) of which have been in a management capacity is preferred.
  • Incident investigation or Root Cause Analysis training is preferred.

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively supervise, train and direct others (peers, employees, contractors/vendors).
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment in a unionized setting.
  • Knowledge of power plant processes and equipment.
  • Knowledge of plant operations and maintenance requirements.
  • Project management skills.
  • Employee relations skills, especially in a union environment.
