Job Summary
The Corporate Communications Manager at Duke Energy is responsible for working with and supporting key leaders in the Chief Administrative Officer and Human Resources organizations to help find innovative solutions to challenging topics, share impactful stories and enhance the name and reputation of the company.
This includes developing corporate communications plans, developing messaging and talking points, serving as media spokesperson, which could include on-camera interviews, issues management, surfacing impactful stories, thought leadership, identifying opportunities for positive media stories and developing and pitching news releases and executive communications support.
The position requires communications knowledge and experience, and the ability to coordinate complex communications. Requires the ability to work both independently and in a team environment, including direct interactions with senior leaders. Requires managing multiple high-profile, high-priority projects concurrently and adapting quickly to changes in priorities and schedules.
Key Skills and Experience
- Strong experience in communications and media relations, including strategy and message development, thought leadership, issues management and serving as a company spokesperson.
- Strong experience developing and implementing communications plans to effectively manage response to emerging issues.
- Experience working with senior levels of management and providing executive counsel and coaching for media interviews, presentations and other external events.
- Experience representing the company externally with diverse audiences in challenging situations.
- Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills; writing samples will be requested.
- Ability to work and make decisions independently and collaboratively with multiple stakeholders.
- Experience working in a matrix organization.
- Experience in issues management and crisis communications.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with manager of Corporate Communications to execute communication strategies, including establishing key audiences, stakeholders, objectives, expected results and metrics for success.
- Develop, implement and measure impact of complex communications plans on varied subjects. Responsibilities include writing and delivering key messages to various stakeholders including media and sharing through various communications channels including news releases, social media content and other collateral materials to manage the company's reputation.
- Must build and maintain strong relationships and serve as a trusted advisor to senior leaders.
- Staying up to date on company and industry-related issues and developing communications strategies to address these issues.
- Surface stories and identify opportunities to highlight innovation and human capital management through positive media stories.
- Serves as part of the company's crisis communications team, including support for storms and operational events, and participates in on-call media/emergency duty rotation.
- Design and implement innovative campaigns that deliver corporate messages using the most effective communications vehicles available.
- Develop new ways to broaden the reach of company-related news and information.
- Ability to multitask, prioritize, and excel in a fast-paced environment under intense deadline pressure.
Basic/Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public relations or a related field.
- In addition to required degree, two (2) years minimum of related work experience.
- In lieu of bachelor's degree AND two (2) years minimum of related work experience, high school diploma/GED AND six (6) years minimum of related work experience.
Desired Qualifications
- At least five (5) years related experience in media relations, executive communications support and issues management/crisis communications.
- Strong media relations experience serving as a spokesperson on contentious issues. This includes strategy and message development and maintaining reporter relationships.
- Experience in creating strategic communications plans designed to help leaders and clients achieve their business objectives.
- Proven experience in executive communications.
- Demonstrated ability to resolve high impact, complex and/or cross-functional problems.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills with a high degree of self-awareness that will make the candidate successful in relation to a high-performing ream.
- At least five (5) years of experience in corporate communications.
- Experience in identifying potential and emerging issues and developing strategic counsel to business unit leaders.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, concisely and accurately using written and verbal communications.
- Experience developing and implementing complex communications plans.
- Experience working with business unit leaders and providing executive counsel and coaching for media interviews, presentations/speeches.
- Experience representing the company externally with challenging audiences in potentially difficult situations.
- Highly flexible and adaptable.
- Ability to participate in/lead crisis management response.
- Ability to rapidly respond to immediate communications needs and issues.
- Accredited in public relations.
