Job Summary

The Field Operations Superintendent will oversee the construction, operation, and maintenance of the electric system, ensure compliance with engineering specifications and industry construction and maintenance standards, establish short and long-term work priorities, and keep senior management apprised of section activities. The superintendent role plans, organizes, supervises, and directs the tasks and crew of the Construction Department in the construction and maintenance activities of the electric system. Supervise crews involved in both Overhead Transmission and Underground Residential Distribution work. Provide leadership and safety oversight to crews. Duties are performed by established policies, procedures, instructions, and safe work practices. Communicates and promotes EPB performance measures to employees to ensure company success.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with Work Planning to resource and oversee all types of work based on system and customer needs within your workgroup to meet customer deadlines.

  • Work proactively to ensure crews and leadership work as efficiently and effectively as possible to minimize outage times.

  • Influence and control the department's portion of SAIDI and CAIDI as part of divisional goals.

  • Communicate with design, key customers, project managers, system operations, and work planning as issues and changes arise.

  • Utilize experience and knowledge of EPB construction specifications, transformer standards, NESC regulations, TDOT, OSHA, and easements to solve problems.

  • Identify, monitor, and correct employee performance among reporting staff promptly and decisively; hold individuals accountable for their actions; and enforce changes in the workplace through coaching, setting goals, and giving feedback as needed.

  • Assigns tasks, sets clear objectives/outcomes, and closely monitors processes and results.

  • Perform all phases of the performance management process by setting clear expectations.

  • Provide frequent, constructive feedback.

  • Exercise usual supervisory authority regarding personnel matters such as selection, training, discipline, performance appraisal, work assignments, promotions, employee relations, and salary changes; Analyze and project future personnel requirements.

  • Use workforce and resources as necessary to meet department responsibilities effectively with the current workforce.

  • Supervise field personnel and conduct crew evaluations, ensuring successful completion of the assigned tasks with maximum efficiency.

  • Take necessary action and inform the Department Manager of all problems, progress, trends, and changes.

  • Participate in developing standards and practices, work rules, equipment specifications, and selection.

  • Manage the application of standards, adherence to work rules, and equipment performance, acting as necessary.

  • Ensure all employees have the knowledge and skills to do their work safely and correctly.

  • Conduct safety training and coordinate with Safety for any additional training needs identified from observations.

  • Conduct and document crew visits regularly to ensure adherence to established safety procedures and rules.

  • Take responsibility for the safety of all personnel in Operations by promoting and enforcing compliance with all safety practices and policies.

  • Prepare and submit written and computer-generated evaluations of personnel performance in a timely, professional, and honest manner.

  • Work with the Key Customer Group and Field Service Logistics on outages, assist in investigating unusual events that disrupt customers' power, and work to prevent future occurrences.

  • Check time sheets daily for accuracy, completion, and union rule compliance.

  • Execute and record changes to job designs as necessary and communicate with system operations and maps and records.

  • Communicate and coordinate with the meter department for relocating meters on changes of installation and services.

  • Understand department budget, provide input for long-range planning, and implement strategies to improve the organization's financial health.

  • Verify contractor time sheets and vendor invoicing for outside labor and material charges on a monthly and project basis.

  • Utilize field experience in making decisions to best serve our customers while being good stewards of ratepayers.

  • Actively participate in apprentice committee training evaluations and training for future workforce development.

  • Ensure employees understand the effect of their actions on cross-department projects and emphasize teamwork across all organizational lines.

  • Maintain job awareness and ability to resolve an issue when away from work, not on-call.

  • Recommend appropriate training programs and approve course material and testing standards.

  • Make recommendations to the manager regarding section efficiency and productivity improvements.

  • Work with engineering and management to develop and implement a regular maintenance program to ensure system reliability and dependability of service.

  • Work with department managers to develop and implement policies and procedures.

  • Ensure all jobs are on time and within budget per cost projections.

  • Establish and execute special departmental projects and perform miscellaneous duties assigned by the Department Manager.

  • Work at a high level for extended periods during system emergencies including bird-dogging, providing field supervision, overseeing contractors, and map-room assistance in drawing jobs and coordinating resources.

  • Pull 24/7 on-call duty for weekly rotations during the year. Responsible for decision-making affecting public safety and the best interest of EPB.

Education and Experiences

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Engineering degree or extensive field experience preferred.

  • Completion of an applicable apprenticeship program or equivalent skills, knowledge, and abilities preferred.

  • 5+ years experience in a supervisory or leadership position in electric operations preferred.

  • Extensive work experience in operation and maintenance of electric transmission and distribution systems.

  • Extensive exposure to emergency/disaster operations.
