JOB OVERVIEW

Ontario Power Generation Inc. (OPG) is looking for a professional to join our team, in the role of Senior Protection and Control Supervisor.

The Senior Protection and Control Supervisor is responsible for Supervising and participating in the work of a group involved in the installation, maintenance and trouble-shooting of protection, control and electrical facilities.  This role is accountable for planning, organizing and assigning work to staff and providing technical guidance on the more complex aspects of protection, control and electrical installations and unique operating problems.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Develop the work program for the assigned Unit according to standards and local requirements. Direct the program, organizing resources for maximum effectiveness. Modify the program to meet changing conditions. Monitor program costs and respond to variances. Review existing methods, procedures, accomplishments, and analyze costs to recognize means for increasing productivity and effectiveness.

  • Supervise and direct staff in achievement of Unit objectives. Plan, organize and administer work operations. Develop, implement and maintain adequate work methods, procedures and standards. Train, instruct, assess performance and handle personnel matters. Carrying out various operations and monitoring the work activities requires frequent highway travel to various sites.

  • Required to contribute to specific components of the work program.

  • Determine technical, labour, and scheduling requirements of projects, collaborating with various departments and resources as required to incorporate into Unit work program. Provide guidance as required on projects to ensure adherence to contract conditions.

  • Interpret and implement standards, procedures, and work strategies for commissioning, maintaining, or modifying protection, control and electrical equipment. Ensure that proper work methods and procedures are followed.

  • Review/evaluate protection, control and electrical facilities within the Unit to identify requirements, make recommendations, and eliminate deficiencies. Develop methods for changing or improving protection, control, or electrical equipment and systems.

  • Ensure coordination of production activities with those of other internal and external groups.

  • Provide technical advice, guidance, and assistance on protection, control and electrical matters to staff and other internal and external groups.

  • Monitor and provide training for Unit staff in safe and effective work practices and procedures. Ensure that staff are trained in core and specialized areas in order to meet the requirements of the Unit.

  • Prepare and/or arrange for settings, specifications, drawings, layout plans, instructions, detailed estimates, material/equipment lists and requisitions, work orders, and tenders. Arrange for installation and commissioning as required.

  • Evaluate needs, recommend and justify the purchase of test instruments, tools, and work equipment required to perform protection, control and electrical work activities.

  • Other Duties as Required

EDUCATION

  • 4 years of University training.

QUALIFICATIONS:

We are looking for a Senior Protection and Control Supervisor with the following qualifications and experience:

  • 6 years and up to and including 8 years of relevant experience is considered necessary to be successful in this role

  • Experience with design and commissioning work, project management and overall organization of the plant group and consequential interrelationships of the power system

  • Knowledge of plant control systems

  • Prior experience applying theories into practice in actual operating conditions

  • Experience in the development and scheduling of work programs

  • Requires excellent interpersonal and communication skills and highly developed organizational skills

  • Excellent problem solving abilities and the ability provide guidance. 

  • Previous experience in a supervisory position
