ABOUT THE ROLE
An opportunity exists at TransAlta for a Senior Analyst, Market Compliance, reporting to the Sr. Manager, Market Compliance.
TransAlta's Market Compliance team provides guidance, training and oversight to enable the highest level of ethical and compliant behavior by TransAlta's energy traders, asset optimizers and generation operations staff. The Market Compliance program ensures that TransAlta's market activities conform to all applicable laws, regulations and market rules.
This role is accountable for independent monitoring of compliance risks associated with energy trading activity by utilizing transaction and communication monitoring tools to screen for potential issues. This role is also accountable for compiling internal management reporting on the results of the compliance program and for external reporting to regulatory agencies. The role interacts with Energy Trading & Marketing staff and collaborates with other teams including Regulatory, Legal, Risk, IT, and Internal Audit.
This role is based at our head office in Downtown Calgary, with the flexibility of a hybrid work arrangement (days in the office & days at home).
WHAT YOU WILL DO
- Reviewing transactions and business communications in North American power, natural gas and commoditized emission markets, analyzing for known and unknown compliance risks
- Supporting the development and continual improvement of a large suite of trade surveillance and activity monitoring reports in Excel, SQL and Power BI using algorithms derived from enforcement cases and analysis of market and trade data
- Developing an understanding of physical and financial derivative transactions and trading processes used for speculation and hedging purposes
- Developing an understanding of energy market dynamics and the market rules that are monitored and enforced by various regulators
- Working with other team members to conduct assessments in support of compliance reviews and investigations
- Providing periodic regulatory reporting to agencies
- Preparing periodic management reporting on the results of the compliance program
- Maintaining process documentation to support reviews and investigations, and to sustain monitoring processes and tools
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU
- Undergraduate degree in Economics, Finance, Mathematics, Engineering or other quantitative discipline
- 5-7 years business experience
- Strong interest in commodity markets and derivatives
- Experience developing informational reports from complex data sources, and communicating technical information to non-technical audiences
- Previous experience working in an energy trading environment, and/or compliance, regulatory or risk management exposure is an asset
- Proficiency with database query-building (SQL/Oracle) and Power BI data visualizations is an asset
- Results focused, with a track record of working collaboratively
- Ability to think creatively and problem solve independently
- Strong attention to detail and good organizational skills
