Salary Range:  $84,234 - $140,589 Relocation:  No

Summary

This position's primary function is to perform engineering studies of Oncor's transmission system in the areas of dynamic stability, steady-state power-flow, sub-synchronous oscillation (SSO), electromagnetic transients (EMT), small signal stability, and others as needed.  In addition to performing technical studies, this position will play an active role in Oncor's compliance with planning related NERC and ERCOT requirements, ensuring that supporting evidence is created, maintained, and readily available. This position will assist or lead the development of transmission plans and ERCOT Regional Planning Group submittals or other responsibilities leading to the reliable and optimized operation of the transmission system.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

Other duties may be assigned.  Directly or through others, the incumbent:

Technical Studies:

  • Performs studies in support of ERCOT system reliability including steady-state, stability, short circuit, SSO, and EMT
  • Provides support to other Oncor groups through studies, reports, and meetings
  • Develops and maintains accurate dynamic stability models of the Oncor system
  • Performs other system studies and analyses as requested

Compliance:

  • Develops expertise in the applicable Standards, Protocols and Guides, and develops procedures to ensure compliance.
  • Develops and performs self assessments to demonstrate Oncor's compliance
  • Provides support to Assets Planning's compliance team for audits and information requests
  • Develops and maintains a current knowledge of all electric utility rules, technical, administrative and regulatory requirements for reliable, safe operation of the Oncor transmission system

General:

  • Develops and maintains collaborative working relationships with industry colleagues such as peer utility staff, ERCOT staff, and other stakeholders to effectively resolve issues of common need and interest
  • Interfaces with ERCOT stakeholder meetings as necessary, including the Dynamics Working Group (DWG)
  • Performs all essential aspects and functions of the job as well as any other specific job requirements

Education, Experience, & Skills

  • Education - Bachelor of Science or higher in Electrical Engineering or related field, Power Systems focus preferred
  • Ability to:
    • perform both high-level screening and in-depth detailed power system simulation, analysis, and design
    • analyze complex technical problems and develop multiple solution alternatives
    • develop scripts and algorithms to automate tasks and solve computational problems
    • communicate complex technical information to a wide variety of audiences, in both oral and written forms
    • represent our team through internal and external working groups
    • create, modify, and analyze technical documents
    • translate compliance requirements into clear written procedures
    • work effectively on a team or as an individual
  • Familiarity with the Oncor transmission system and with ERCOT practices associated with ERCOT transmission planning, operation, and modeling including the ERCOT Planning Guide, Operating Guides, and Protocols preferred
  • Familiarity with PSSE, ASPEN, PSCAD, and Python preferred
  • Engineer - two years of electrical utility experience in engineering, planning, operations or operations support role
  • Staff Engineer - four years of electrical utility experience in engineering, planning, operations or operations support role
  • Senior Engineer - six years of electrical utility experience in engineering, planning, operations or operations support role

Measures of Success

  • Timely identification and resolution of potential stability issues within the Oncor system, including endorsement by internal and external stakeholders
  • Oncor Transmission Planning philosophy and procedures developed in compliance with all NERC and ERCOT requirements
  • Improved planning efficiency from analysis of the transmission system through new/improved advanced tools
  • Observed growth in technical ability and communication skills
  • Demonstrated initiative in supporting the team by taking on reach projects, providing training, and other tasks as needed
