The Telecommunications Technician will perform, with intermediate supervision and clearly defined procedures, moderate level installation, maintenance and repair of various Telecommunications related equipment, using accepted practices and procedures.
Perform system testing, troubleshooting, issue resolution, and produce required documentation.
Work to gain knowledge and understanding of various Telecommunications technologies and business processes.
Provide assistance to others when required or as needed. Analyze possible solutions using standard procedures.
Exhibit a positive, collaborative attitude working in a team environment.
Must be accountable for one's own work and advancement.
All above activities will be performed with an emphasis on safety for yourself and others.

Job Description

Essential Job Functions:

  • Perform intermediate level installation, maintenance and repair of various Telecommunications related equipment.
  • Perform intermediate level troubleshooting and system testing and produce required documentation.
  • Utilize telecommunications knowledge gained to assist others in a technical discipline.
  • Focus on learning and advancing present levels of competency in required technical disciplines.
  • Understand Telecommunications business unit and customer requirements.
  • Adapt to changing work schedules and priorities.
  • Perform required entries into database and record keeping systems for work and asset tracking.
  • Radio Systems - Demonstrate understanding of Land Mobile Radio Systems, basic electronics, antenna systems, 450Mhz Motorola Conventional and 800Mhz P25 repeater systems as well as mobiles, portables, consoles and Point to Multi-point 800 and 900Mhz EMS/Scada radio systems.  Exhibit the ability to configure basic computer hardware components, wiring techniques and perform vehicle installations. 
  • Site Infrastructure - Exhibit a working knowledge of telecom shelters, including HVAC, DC charger systems, AC power, propane generators, coax, waveguide, antennas, and general site maintenance.

Minimum Requirements:

Education:

  • Associate Degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering Technology or, technical degree OR certificate in related field, OR
  • High School Diploma/GED with 4 years of related experience.

Experience:

  • Two years technical or related field (In addition to any experience identified above).

Other Requirements:

  • A strong electronics / telecommunications aptitude is desired.
  • Telecommunications Technical Proficiency: Able to demonstrate moderate support skills in one or more of the following areas:
  • Demonstrate understanding of Land Mobile Radio systems, including all types of two-way radio equipment, remote control, multiple access, GPS and antenna systems. Exhibit understanding of control methods involving multi -site controllers and data gateways. Demonstrate understanding of IP related radio systems.
  • Exhibit a working knowledge of telecommunications transport systems, including microwave radio and fiber optic systems. Demonstrate understanding of fiber optic cable and splice methods and requirements.
  • Exhibit understanding of channel multiplexing methods and techniques.
  • Exhibit understanding of AC/DC power systems, and requirements or safe operation of UPS and other AC/DC power delivery systems. Exhibit a working knowledge of SCADA systems, RTU related equipment, and various telemetry equipment including installation, maintenance, repair, and the ability to apply basic troubleshooting practices and procedures.
  • Demonstrate understanding of voice/video systems, including video conferencing systems and IP telephony.
  • Exhibit understanding of telecommunications wiring requirements and installation methods.
  • Demonstrate understanding of LAN/WAN system requirements in the installation and maintenance of routers, switches and related equipment. Exhibit working knowledge of networking wireless devices, digital terminating equipment and various structured wiring requirements and industry standard practices. Demonstrate understanding of IP systems and architecture.
  • Exhibit a working knowledge of mobile data computers including troubleshooting techniques and processes, configuration of basic computer hardware components, and vehicle installation and wiring techniques.
  • Travel as required per position.
  • Ability to work overtime as required.
