PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION

Is required to complete the Gas Construction and Maintenance Trainee program within 18 months from the date of start in the program. The GCM&R Trainee will follow the Gas Training NorthStar process for approximately 18 months. During this time the GCM&R Trainee must successfully demonstrate the functional skills and pass written tests to be eligible to promote to the Underground Mechanic B position. During approximately the first 3 months of the program the GCM&R trainee is assigned to the Utility Learning Center for classroom training, as well as physical attainment of the skills and tools of the Gas Construction and Maintenance trade. Under the direction of qualified instructors, the GCM&R Trainee will learn how to interpret construction drawings, standards, safety practices, work procedures and regulations; and apply that knowledge to the construction, maintenance and servicing of gas utility infrastructure and customer equipment. After initial classroom training, the GCM&R Trainee will be required to apply the learned knowledge and skills on-the-job, while working in the field with an assigned GCM&R crew. All field duties will be performed under the direction of a qualified Gas Underground Crew Leader and/or Gas Underground Mechanic. The Trainee shall ensure their Field Journal is updated appropriately as they demonstrate task competency. After the initial on-the-job field training, the GCM&R Trainee will return to the Utility Training center for additional classroom training.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience: Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent Training, education and/or experience in a technical or vocational field; or equivalent combination of formal education/training and experience.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge: General technical and mechanical background is preferred Skills/Abilities: Ability to interpret and accurately follow written and verbal technical instructions. Physical ability to perform assigned job duties, (e.g., ability to lift 90 lbs. or greater; work in manholes, underground utility vaults and excavated trenches; operate heavy duty construction equipment). Ability to use hand and power tools such as shovels, tampers etc. Ability to meet Occupational Safety and Health Administration weight restriction (275 lbs.) for excavation entry when wearing required tools. Willingness to work under adverse working conditions (e.g., inclement weather and vehicular traffic) and be available to work in emergencies. Required to work various shifts, weekends, holidays and mandatory overtime. Satisfactory completion of the Construction and Skilled Trades Test Battery. Ability to meet and maintain Company driving standards. Must possess drivers' license. Valid Level 1 authorization or appropriate Commercial Driver's License. Must notify the company of changes impacting ability to drive. Maintain a Commercial Driver's License as determined by the department. This position is considered a 'safety sensitive' function and may be subject to DOT drug and alcohol testing. Ability to operate and update a Mobile Data Terminal/Desktop computer. Ability to Diagnose, Analyze and Investigate illegal and unsafe hazards on all utility equipment. Ability to comprehend training modules and successfully pass written and practical demonstration testing to progress to the next classification. Demonstrated ability to write, speak, read, comprehend and communicate clearly and accurately in the English language. Must be willing and able to work overtime on a regular basis and must be available or callout overtime, when required, consistent with the Labor Agreement.
