WORK ILLUSTRATION:

Reporting to the Director, Capacity Planning and Grid Innovation, the Manager, Engineering (Capacity Planning) is responsible for the effective management of processes and resources for the purpose of providing direction to a cross functional team executing distribution substation capital project planning, and developing and leveraging analytical capabilities in load forecasting to manage the capacity of distribution system grid assets. The Manager will lead key strategic projects within the Planning, Engineering and Modernization division and the organization as a whole. In addition, the incumbent is responsible for building and maintaining critical relationships with internal and external stakeholders, primarily Hydro One (HONI), The Independent System Operator (IESO) and City of Toronto to support stations project planning and execution. The incumbent will also be responsible for leading and/or supporting strategic grid modernization initiatives related to Transportation Electrification.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:       

  • Supervises a team of technical professionals and students, including engineers, to develop and execute short-term and long-term investment, business and/or technology plans for Toronto Hydro substations
  • Supports and direct substation planning activities that are part of the Integrated Planning and Portfolio Reporting (IPPR) process on an annual basis while driving continuous improvement within the process.
  • Leads and/or supports the development and implementation of innovation and continuous improvement initiatives to advance the utility's Peak Demand Load Forecasting ability
  • Leads and coordinates the Stations Planning contribution to 2025-2029 Rate Filing Application (Distribution System Plan and related elements) in close collaboration with key stakeholders
  • Responds to stakeholder requirements and delivers strategic input for inclusion in regulatory filings and other business cases
  • Conducts research and studies on technology and engineering trends and assembles strategic plans, specifically as it relates to distribution substation modernization.
  • Reviews engineering work and plans relating to asset plans, capacity planning, system planning, standards, and maintenance to support the establishment of executable work plans with embedded safety and quality operational considerations
  • Forecasts work volumes and resourcing; prioritizes and manages work flows to ensure all internal and external deadlines are met
  • Leads project management and oversight related to the execution of distribution system plans and alignment to regulatory filings
  • Strong understanding of the operations within the organization - including knowledge of investment planning, procurement, maintenance, and system reliability.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the electrical substation design, including substation system equipment and related technology
  • Accountable for prioritization for project interdependencies, risks, resourcing and project scope and change management
  • Oversees the development of evidence and requirements; contributes to the development of accurate and defendable plans and evidence through the development of high-quality business cases in order to obtain approval from various internal and external stakeholders
  • Plays a key role in advancing Toronto Hydro's asset management capabilities and strategic asset management plan, including the ISO 55000 alignment initiative
  • Manage internal and external stakeholder relationships and expectations effectively to support team success.
  • Ensures data is updated/maintained to be used for the regulatory application and during interrogatories

                                    

REQUIREMENTS:   

  • Bachelor degree in Engineering (Electrical preferred); post graduate degree preferred
  • Registered Professional Engineer in Ontario
  • Six (6) years engineering and/or asset management experience, preference to regulated utility engineering or operations experience
  • Three (3) years of progressive leadership and/or project leadership experience
  • Experience working on strategic initiatives and successfully leading change management in an organization
  • Valid Class "G" Drivers License
  • Experience in process optimization, designing, mapping and successfully rolling out new initiatives to the organization
  • Strong knowledge of best practices for utility engineering planning and asset management best practices
  • Strong understanding of the operations within the organization - including knowledge of standards, procurement, maintenance, and system reliability
  • Knowledge of finance model for capital program - project budget, expenditures, etc.
