Position Summary

Operations assesses & manages the performance of assets and systems for electric generation, gas, and electric transmission/distribution systems. Data systems that support data capture, extraction, analysis and reporting for regulatory, compliance and business planning requirements are critical. This position leads the program development, implementation, and management to capture, maintain and analyze data and work processes supporting the business needs of Operations. This position leads efforts to enhance processes while ensuring data accuracy and consistency for both operational and regulatory requirements across Xcel Energy. Recognized as a Subject Matter Expert regarding reliability data capture/analysis/reporting and business process development for maintenance and tracking of asset data and system performance. Primary liaison to Business Systems for the analysis, development/implementation of data/business systems driven by regulatory compliance/corporate policies.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Leads the development and implementation of technology, information systems and strategies targeted at the maintenance and tracking of assets ensuring compliance with all regulatory, business and customer requirements. Liaison to other Operations Organizations (i.e. Generation, Transmission, Distribution), and Regulatory, and Business Systems groups regarding reliability data quality and use for corporate and regulatory reporting. Directs the formation, development and implementation of applications specifically designed to improve the accuracy, timeliness and integrity of asset data.

  • Leads the development, prioritization and management of the business requirements related to new information systems projects and major enhancements and/or replacements for existing information systems related to reliability and operational system management. Manages the prioritization process for systems projects, preparation of regulatory, business and financial justification for projects, and ensures that overall project selection is integrated into corporate strategic plans, budgets, regulatory requirements and financial projections.

  • Examines existing information systems and determines system and software configuration changes necessary to meet regulatory and business requirements. Oversees the development and maintenance of appropriate project tracking tools. Responsible for providing oversight and guidance for data system enhancements supporting the capture, maintenance and tracking of assets. Supports cross-functional collaboration in the development and tracking of business improvements supporting data management processes.

  • Provides expertise and confidential internal consulting to Operations management on regulatory and business functions and the information systems needed to support those functions relative to Generation, Transmission, Distribution Operations, Regulatory, and Business Systems. Serves as the primary technology resource supporting the analysis, development, testing and implementation of both current and future data system applications utilized by the Operations organization.

  • In support of reliability and system modernization efforts, finds new opportunities in statistical analysis, predictive analytics, and transforming data into information with appropriate business context and opportunities. Investigates complex data table structures to identify data relationships and the location of required data. Validates accuracy of the extraction or query results. Stratifies results to provide meaningful insights and key messages. Leads the development and implementation of technology addressing the gathering of data with regard to Capital improvements, equipment removal, ongoing maintenance and operation of assets.

  • Recognized as the key Subject Matter Expert with Operations personnel and senior management to understand business challenges and forge a partnering relationship for problem solving. Intimately understands the business and/or information challenge within operating groups. Offers suggestions for improvement and/or further research into data findings or process issues. Clarifies data requirements, manages expectations, and enhances organization's credibility, transparency, and partnership within Xcel Energy and its regulatory relationships. Provides direction and guidance to other staff as needed. This position may supervise other staff. Ensures all analytical and reporting responsibilities have identified backups who are trained as required. Supports an environment of continuous improvement and learning to foster skill development.


Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business, Engineering, Engineering Technology, Math, Finance, Statistics or related scientific fields (or combination of education and experience providing equivalent knowledge)

  • Demonstrated expert level knowledge in Microsoft Office applications.

  • 5-7 years related work experience demonstrating mastery skill levels with database structures, application debugging, query and report building, data analysis, data research, data quality review, data requirements development, flowcharting, and data graphing/presentation.

Preferred Requirements

  • 5-7 years of experience in technical data system development and advanced analysis with related experience in data management, analysis, or statistics

  • Experience as business area liaison for IT development Process documentation experience for training and consistent application Advanced knowledge and experience in utility operations and related system applications

  • Knowledge of Business Objects and Minitab In-depth knowledge of and competency in gas and electric utility design, construction, system operations and safety methods Strong organizational/time management skills with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects concurrently with no supervision while meeting schedules and deadlines to assure successful results Strong communication skills and assertiveness to ask insightful questions and learn industry-specific terminology.
