Environmental professional with experience in environmental compliance, permitting, policy advocacy and/or environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) / sustainability strategy and reporting. Based on Company need, the Environmental / Chemical Engineer I, II, or Senior Engineer will provide technical expertise in air, water, waste, and chemical management and reporting regulatory programs to support the Company's business units and to implement the Company's Environmental Compliance Program; support environmental policy advocacy efforts on behalf of the Company and/or support sustainability reporting efforts and ESG/sustainability policy strategy.

Position-Related Responsibilities

This position may include, but not be limited to, the following responsibilities:

Environmental Compliance 

  • Provides technical and regulatory support in air, water, waste and chemical management and reporting. 
  • Provides technical support to UNS Energy Corporation facilities (including TEP and UniSource Energy Services (UES) power generation assets, transmission and distribution assets and ancillary support assets) to assure compliance and provide proper interpretation of regulatory requirements and guidance.
  • Supports Environmental Compliance leadership in the preparation of environmental permit applications.
  • Inspects field operations, when necessary, to ensure that construction and operation procedures and practices are performed consistent with Company and regulatory environmental requirements.
  • Implements and updates the Company Environmental Compliance Program and related Corporate Environmental Policies and Procedures under the direction of Environmental Compliance leadership. 
  • Evaluates environmental impacts of Company Business Units' proposed projects and helps development of recommendations for appropriate actions and/or studies required to achieve business objectives consistent with environmental requirements.
  • Assesses proposed new legislation/regulatory actions for potential impact to UNS Energy Corporation facilities or operations.
  • Supports Company interaction with governmental agencies regarding permit actions/new rulemaking activities to assure proper future environmental planning and compliance.
  • Participates in industry association meetings and workshops as they pertain to environmental compliance to stay abreast of developments and opportunities.
  • Assists and/or leads in the preparation of air quality compliance submittals to EPA, ADEQ, PDEQ and MCAQD.  Provides project support to the fossil fuel fired EGUs within the UNS Energy Corporation family of Business Units for ensuring compliance with various air regulatory programs (e.g., NSPS, NESHAP, Title V, Acid Rain, etc.).
  • Assists and/or leads in the development and filing of Emission Inventory and GHG reports.
  • Provides project support to the various departments within the UNS Energy Corporation family of Business Units in the proper method of identifying, handling, storing, record-keeping, transporting, disposing, and reporting of all types of regulated wastes (e.g., RCRA, TSCA, NESHAP, etc.).
  • Assists and/or leads in the implementation of EPCRA programs and assists in the filing of TRI, Tier II, and FERP for UNS Energy Corporation facilities.
  • Provides project support to the various departments within the UNS Energy Corporation family of Business Units in the proper method of identifying, handling, storing, record-keeping, transporting, disposing, and reporting of all types of regulated wastes (e.g., RCRA, TSCA, NESHAP, etc.).
  • Assists and/or leads in the preparation and/or review of water quality and water use compliance submittals to EPA, ADEQ, ADWR, PDEQ, and local POTWs.  Provides support to the UNS Energy Corporation family of Business Units for ensuring compliance with various water regulatory programs (e.g., AZPDES, APP, SPCC, etc.).
  • Assists and/or leads in the implementation of EPCRA programs and assists in the filing of TRI, Tier II, and FERP for UNS Energy Corporation facilities.
  • Assists and/or leads in the development and filing of Emission Inventory and GHG reports.
  • Supports preparation of TSCA PCB annual reports and other environmental activities, as needed.
  • Assists with environmental due diligence work related to the acquisition or disposition of assets (including Phase I and II environmental assessments and site investigations); 
  • Supports or performs projects such as spill evaluation, spill response, remediation, and/or reporting, 
  • Supports environmental compliance audits of Company assets and environmental vendor audits. 
  • Supports the Company's implementation of environmental management information systems.
  • Supports and/or leads internal Company environmental training to enhance understanding of environmental requirements and compliance obligations. 
  • This position may provide services to affiliates of the Company subject to the UNS Energy Code of Conduct and the related Policies and Procedures.

ESG/Sustainability

  • Supports Sustainability leadership with reporting efforts for the Company and assists Fortis and its subsidiaries with sustainability reporting efforts.
  • Supports and/or leads the preparation of UNS Energy sustainability reporting efforts. 
  • Works closely with cross functional teams including, Corporate Communications, External Reporting, Integrated Resource Planning, Energy Programs, Demand Side Management, etc. to prepare sustainability reporting to the public.
  • Provides utility specific metrics to customers to aid in their sustainability efforts in close coordination with Key Account Managers.
  • Participates in industry association meetings and workshops as they pertain to ESG/Sustainability to stay abreast of developments and opportunities.
  • Working closely with Sustainability leadership, assists with the development and implementation of corporate ESG/sustainability strategies and tracks ESG and environmental policy that may impact UNS Energy and Fortis operations. 
  • Supports Fortis environmental sustainability reporting efforts, including data collection and preparation, data validation, and data consolidation.
  • Administers and/or supports the administrative of Workiva as the sustainability data management platform for Fortis. 
  • Assists with the assessment of proposed new legislation/regulatory actions for potential impact to UNS Energy Corporation ESG/sustainability reporting.
  • Supports and/or leads the preparation of comments to proposed rules, rule summaries and potential risk impact analysis. 
  • Participates or manages on the Company's grassroots sustainability green team: UNS Employees Creating Opportunities for Sustainability (ECOS).  Senior level Engineer will also maintain a leadership role on the UNS ECOS steering committee.  
  • Coordinates corporate sustainability projects with Company Business Units.
  • Encourages employee engagement through sustainability initiatives and challenges, helps coordinate Lunch and Learns, and publishes sustainability tips and newsletters.
  • Coordinate with and/or manage outside sustainability consultants.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.)

Level I

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the electric or gas utility industry.
