Description
Reporting to the Manager, you will join a highly skilled engineering team, tasked with the upkeep and expansion of critical electrical infrastructure found in municipal transmission and distribution substations. Projects involve the installation, alteration, extension, and/or repair of a variety of electrical equipment; controlled, monitored, and/or automated by complex circuity, electronics, and advanced communication networks. You will be involved in aspects of these projects including their implementation, coordination, review, and scheduling.

The incumbent is expected to behave ethically and follow the established code of business conduct, policies, and internal control procedures, laws, and regulations governing Toronto Hydro.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare, design, modify, or review site-specific single-line and three-line diagrams, AC/DC electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment layouts, panel layouts, civil, mechanical, and electrical drawings, and logic diagrams
  • Prepare and/or review construction packages, including all required drawings, work instructions, planning documentation, operating systems, and regulatory approvals, where required
  • Conduct routine field trips in order to verify or evaluate the condition/state of assets, determine the feasibility of designs, take detailed measurements, collect nameplate data or equipment settings, and provide technical field support to operations staff
  • Assemble/verify bills of materials
  • Perform routine engineering calculations and cost-benefit analysis
  • Select or verify adequately rated equipment or components, including appropriate cable/wire ampacities
  • Ensure design compliance with all applicable codes, industry standards, Toronto Hydro construction standards, design guidelines, and utility best practice
  • Incorporate failsafe practices and operational safety requirements into all designs
  • Update records with as-built construction drawings
  • Escalate design issues to Professional Engineers for review and direction
  • Support Standards to standardize and stock code commonly used materials
  • Assist in the review of designs, plans, drawings, surveys, studies (load, etc.), and/or calculations
  • Support Professional Engineers with detailed technical studies and/or calculations; preparation of cost estimates; the creation of equipment specifications and installation standards; request for quotation; evaluation of new equipment; the creation of new design processes, operational procedures, and safe work practices
  • Help coordinate construction projects - liaise, consult, and communicate with key project stakeholders, including contractors, customers, equipment suppliers, and other utilities
  • Lead projects as the assigned project manager
  • Address internal and external inquiries and complaints
  • Input, update or verify various databases or programs
  • Compile and summarize statistical reports
  • Inspect, investigate, analyze, and make recommendations to revise or improve construction standards, specifications, design, and/or performance
  • Perform other duties as assigned 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with one of the following: an Electrical/Electromechanical Technologist diploma; a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree; a Bachelor of Technology degree with a concentration on Energy Systems Engineering may be considered 
  • CET designation preferred.
  • Valid Class G' Driver's license in the Province of Ontario.
  • Demonstrated competence in computer drafting using MicroStation and/or AutoCAD.
  • General knowledge of overhead and underground distribution system design.
  • Ability to scale drawings & visualize 3D objects/cross-sections in 2D.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications, including Microsoft Project and Visio.
  • Exposure to GIS, DMS, and SCADA software is preferred.
  • Experience with photometric software preferred.
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in the planning, design, and construction, within the utility industry.
  • General knowledge of protection and control concepts.
  • Ability to look up and correctly interpret equipment manufacturer's installation instructions.
  • Knowledge of, and proficiency in the use and application of the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, the National Electrical Safety Code, the Ontario Building Code, the Ontario Fire Code, and relevant industry standards including CSA, IEEE, IEC, ANSI, and NEMA.
  • Experience using SAP.
  • Demonstrated competence in project management, time management, equipment procurement, and construction coordination activities.
