Description

Under close supervision, assists Electrical Test Technician II and III in performing limited tests required by the department. As they become qualified, will perform less sophisticated test procedures involving connections to circuits carrying normal secondary voltages up to 250 volts.

Entry Level

  • High School Diploma or the equivalent and have a two-year electrical or electronic degree, or have the equivalent education plus two years experience in electrical or electronic work.
  • Must have a valid Ohio Driver's License.  CDL license is optional and expenses will be reimbursed.
  • Must demonstrate a working knowledge of basic electrical circuits by passing a written test or technical assessment. 
  • Must have a basic knowledge of computers, ability to learn Company specific software and electronic communications systems and devices. 
  • This position requires cyber or physical access to designated secured areas. 

Fully-Qualified

A minimum of two (2) years experience as an Electrical Test Technician I and has proven the ability to perform the tasks of the job.  Must have optimally completed the Company's Electrical Test Technician training program and continue to pass job-related skill verifications.

Performance Expectations upon Completion of Training and On the Job Experience

  • In the first 6 months employees will be assigned to work with Protection & Control Specialists, Level III and Level II employees in a training and familiarization capacity. The intent is for entry level technicians to become familiar with the Company, people, locations, equipment, safety, terminology, and all other general knowledge.
  • Must align with all the Company's safety regulations and policies.
  • Drive company vehicles to and from various equipment locations, substations and company facilities.
  • Some of the working conditions include an enclosed space environment, outdoor worksites, storms, and night-time work.
  • Become familiar with all basic electrical test equipment such as voltmeters, ammeters, watt meters, power supplies, etc.  Must have the ability to analyze testing problems and the initiative and judgment to tackle them.
  • Under close supervision begin to learn the basic operation and become familiar with substation, distribution, and transmission equipment (control circuits, circuit breakers, transformers, Automatic Throwover Switches(ATO), generators, batteries, capacitor banks, regulators, Load tap Changers (LTC), cables, switches, etc...). 
  • Assisting Testers of higher grade, in making all kinds of tests required in the department; wiring and setting up test equipment; taking reading, making field notes, and operating equipment, as directed. 
  • Investigates trouble or faulty operation of lines and associated equipment, assisting and advising in correction same, if appropriate to do so.
  • Responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and adjustment of electrical and electronic equipment used for voltage regulation.
  • Assisting in the preparation and completion of reports of tests performed in Company's stations, substations, or in the field.
  • Work regularly exposes the employees to hazardous conditions.  Performance of tasks involves
  • maintenance of electric equipment and requires extreme attention to hazardous conditions. 
  • Employees must recognize these hazards and work within the appropriate procedures to assure the safety of everyone.  Under directive supervision learn to follow company procedures and policies. (Safety, radio, administrative, time sheets, record keeping, paper work, etc...).
  • Become familiar with and learn to read various types of prints such as substation, index, SO, primary, secondary, etc... 
  • Set recording devices for tests of voltages, amperage, and wattage or other similar tests.
  • Service recording devices and other test equipment, and perform general inspection and lead repair.
  • Prepare data for, and make corrections on, office drawings and records, as a result of test and inspections in the field. Use prints or sketches to build or repair equipment.
  • Assist Test Technicians of higher grade, in making limited tests required in the department; wire and set up test equipment; take readings, make field notes, and operate equipment, as directed.
  • Investigate trouble or faulty operation of voltage problems, capacitor banks, line regulators, and LTC controls on distribution banks at secondary voltage levels.
  • Individuals must take care of company equipment and are required to take all proper precautions and care while performing work on customer's premises.  Assist and advise other areas and customers in correcting technical problems.
  • Responsible for inspection, maintenance, adjustment, and data manipulation of electrical and electronic equipment used for voltage regulation.
  • Assist in the preparation and completion of reports for tests performed in power stations, substations or in the field.
  • Maintain and update electronic databases, software and computer-based systems.
  • Have a basic knowledge of Company standards and codes and other pertinent regulatory requirements as they relate to the Electrical Test Technician responsibilities
  • Keep inspection notes and conditions on a personal handheld computer, download all pertinent information into a central database, and run reports in any abnormal situations.
