About the Opportunity

Summary of Job Duties and Responsibilities:

The Safety Representative will be located in our Pennsylvania, Ohio, or West Virginia Operations region. The individual will provide generation and utility operations with subject matter expertise for safety, health and human performance.  The advanced / senior safety representative will serve as a resource to management, leadership, supervision, and union / hourly employees in the direction, planning, development, and coordination of the company's safety programs. In addition, they will engage employees, visitors, and contractors at all levels to promote a proactive safety culture where hazard exposure is identified and controlled or eliminated.

Reporting to the Manager, Safety Operations WV & Regulated Generation this position is responsible to:

  • Providing technical / analytical guidance regarding OSHA regulations, as well as applicable consensus standards (i.e., NFPA, ASTM, ANSI, etc.)
  • Perform as a Safety and Health Subject Matter Expert (SME) with the ability to research and present regulatory and technical information. Monitor and communicate regulatory requirements, as they pertain to the business.
  • Provide sound recommendations, innovative solutions, and competent technical guidance resulting in process improvement and/or exposure reduction.
  • Collaborate with Generation / Utility Operations Leadership, FE Contractor Safety, and other FirstEnergy Business Units (as needed) to develop safety and health programs designed to resolve business issues and promote continuous improvement.
  • Lead/support Generation / Utility Operations safety and health program assessments. 
  • Assist Business Unit Leadership in promoting/enhancing knowledge of and conformity with Safety and Health programs, requirements, and expectations.
  • Provide consultation during the analysis of Employee / Contractor events and assist in the development of action plans to prevent recurrence, as needed. Lead or engage with root cause analysis as needed.
  • Analyze Safety data, including observations and performance. Provide reports as needed.
  • Assist in developing annual Industrial Hygiene sampling plan to include health hazard assessments,  audiogram, respiratory protection program, employee coaching and counseling
  • Maintain required records for compliance and maintain confidentiality where required.
  • Actively participate in local safety and fleet safety committees / peer teams.       
  • Develop and deliver training and presentations as needed.

Other responsibilities will include:

  • Educating and directing others on safety practices, improving safety program and process effectiveness, and making significant contributions to the achievement of safety goals and objectives
  • Serving as the lead in diverse and complex projects, processes and programs
  • Independently anticipating and meeting internal/external customer needs
  • Actively developing and implementing safety programs and policies
  • Integrating strategic concepts into safety activities
  • Developing high-level solutions for complex assignment
  • Participate and lead safety and health program teams.

Qualifications include:

  • Bachelor's degree in Safety, Health (Industrial Hygiene), or related discipline, with a minimum of 4-7 years of relevant work experience is required. Master's degree preferred.
  • In depth knowledge of safety and industrial hygiene regulations (OSHA General Industry and Construction) and safe work practices.
  • In depth knowledge of OSHA's Electrical Power Generation, Transmission, and Distribution regulations (Subpart R and V) (preferred)
  • Basic understanding of industry standards related to Health & Safety including: American National Standards Institute (ANSI), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) and the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC).
  • Knowledge of Human Performance Tools and Principles.
  • Knowledge of Root Cause Analysis
  • Experience managing Multi-Employer Worksites (preferred)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work both independently and in a team environment, including leading teams.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with rules and regulations of Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), Department of Labor and the Workers Compensation laws of WV.
  • Experience preparing and delivering presentations and demonstrations to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple tasks and activities
  • OSHA 500 Authorized Instructor for Construction (preferred)
