JOB OVERVIEW

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of Health Physicist.

Reporting to the Section Manager, this position is responsible to perform regulatory review and control functions in the assigned areas of the radiation safety program in support of dosimetry for the nuclear plants and facilities on site. Participate with the Supervisor in carrying out various responsibilities regarding radiation safety as it pertains to the protection of the station personnel and the general public residing in the vicinity of nuclear stations and facilities.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES 

  •  Engage in the radiation protection program for the nuclear stations and facilities located on the site. Organize and schedule assignments, assign and check work. Give advice, instruction and direction on work problems.
  • Approve changes or amendments to radiological protection procedures and practices. Formulate new or revised Radiation Protection Regulations for use throughout Ontario Power Generation for review and approval, relative to control of the operation of nuclear stations and facilities. Provide advice and recommendations to the Senior Health Physicist in radiation protection policy and programs.
  • Assist Supervisor in the operations of the internal and external dosimetry service at station or site and in the estimated measurement of internal and in the estimation of external doses received in unusual situations.
  • Maintain a continuous program of education to sustain a high level of radiation protection knowledge. Assist in the development of radiation protection training courses.
  • Be responsible for the preparation of regular reports on radiological conditions and prepare reports for presentation to outside regulatory authorities, such as the Atomic Energy Control Board on the dosimetry program in support of the stations. Also prepare technical reports on radiation protection experience at the nuclear station.
  • Be responsible for ensuring a satisfactory environmental radiological program for the site and provide environmental sample analyses services.
  • Carry out, various activities in collaboration with the Radiation Control Unit, such as radiation investigations and the controlling of the transfer of radioactive materials on the site as detailed in the Radiation Protection Regulations.
  • Interpret regulations and policy and provide technical assistance and advice on health physics to the operations group. Approve, through talks with AECL and Head Office engineering design personnel, radiation protection methods and equipment during the design and commissioning of new nuclear stations and facilities or alterations and modifications. Approve operating manual, techniques and procedures.
  • Keep up to date and well informed on all new developments in health physics and the related nuclear sciences.
  • At the request of the Supervisor provide information and advice to dosimetry, radiation protection and health physics groups for program changes which will improve radiation protection at the nuclear station and make work more efficient.
  • Perform other duties as required.

EDUCATION

  • Bachelors Degree with a focus in Health Physics, Chemistry, Applied Science, Engineering and/or a relevant study is required.
  • Post-graduate degree with a focus in health physics is an asset,  (CHP) Certified Health Physicist, and/or NRRPT registration from the National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists is an asset
  • Computer science/software engineer/programming skills is an asset

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a flexible hybrid office environment.
  • Experience and exposure from working in/for a highly industrial industry such as; utilities, energy, power, automotive, mining, or manufacturing where gained knowledge and experience in radiation protection policies/standards and procedures is preferred;
  • Knowledge and understanding of chemistry, physics or nuclear engineering and appropriate related mathematics, to understand and apply radiation theories in the assessment of radiation hazards and the development of radiation protection practices;
  • Experience with radiation protection and the related problems that can arise within large nuclear plants and the methods used in dealing with them; expertise with radiation instrumentation, electronics and wireless technologies would be a particular asset;
  • Knowledgeable of related legislation and its influence and our responsibilities to the general public;
  • Experience in implementing and enforcing compliance with various radiation protection and safety programs;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to influence and communicate effectively across the company and externally at all levels to a wide variety of people.  Effective documentation, procedure instruction, presentation and reporting writing skills are required; experience in managing projects involving cross functional teams would be an asset;
  • Broad conceptual, diagnostic and analytical skills; ability to reach well grounded, independent conclusions and influence outcomes;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, experience in shaping and maintaining productive relationships and partnership across the business unit / among all stakeholders. Be a trusted and honest broker;
  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills, experience in leading problem-solving while providing consultant/specialist services;
  • A results-oriented focus, with the ability to work independently in a fast-paced changing environment and effectively manage several projects simultaneously;
  • Commitment to high standards of procedural safety and regulatory compliance;
  • Skills with the extended suite of Microsoft Office Applications such as PowerApps, PowerBI, PowerAutomate, etc would be considered an asset
  • Database query skills such as SQL and MS Access would be considered an asset
  • Specialized software and programming skills such as MCNP and/or deterministic shielding design approach would be considered an asset
