Position Summary

The Grid Operations Leadership oversees the operations of the integrated PG&E transmission system to ensure the grid is operated in a safe, reliable, and compliant manner while minimizing costs to customers and the company. The incumbents lead teams responsible for the coordination and communication of planned or forced equipment outages, system status, unusual events, including the coordination of system restoration following major disturbances. Grid Operations Leadership develop and implement work practices that allow for efficient use of resources and close communications and coordination with other departments to meet PG&E safety, reliability, and customer satisfaction goals. The Vacaville Grid Control Center (VGCC) and the Rocklin Grid Control Center (RGCC) monitor the day-to-day real-time operations of the PG&E transmission system and work closely with California Independent System Operator (CAISO) to maintain system reliability including monitoring voltages, coordinating switching actions, preparing and responding to emergency system events. Leaders create a safety culture for an incident-free work environment and encourage employees to take responsibility for their safety and that of co-workers.

Job Responsibilities

  • Oversees the electric transmission system to ensure the grid is operated in a safe and reliable manner according to regulatory requirements, while minimizing costs to customers and the company. Manages the transmission grid operations including system operations & dispatch, transmission outage planning, training, emergency management and asset performance.
  • Ensures reliable and cost-effective operation of the VGCC and the Rocklin Grid Control Center RGCC which monitor the day-to-day real-time operations of the transmission system. Partners with senior leaders at the CAISO to maintain system reliability and address significant, long-term issues and strategies.
  • Develops plans and strategies for the Asset Performance Center. Utilizes technology and multi-faceted teams and resources to build and maintain an organization to monitor transmission grid health. Ensures necessary asset data is gathered, analyzed, and summarized. Develops and presents recommendations to senior leadership regarding potential changes or improvements to the transmission grid.
  • Develops and maintains the clearance process, including developing and implementing proper training for employees and implementing and maintaining initiatives consistent with industry best practices. Oversees and manages a customer risk process to ensure that clearances have appropriate oversight and reliability plans to account for adequate contingencies.
  • Provides strategic planning and direction for emergency situations. Ensures and ongoing state of readiness and effective plans for emergency response for significant situations and system-wide electrical events. Provides oversight for regular emergency preparedness/planning drills and exercises.
  • Participates in regulatory and industry issues to support transmission system operations. Participates in committees and interfaces with external vendors, California ISO, Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC), North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) contacts regarding industry and western U.S. transmission grid issues, developments, trends, best practices, and contract negotiations.
  • Develops and maintains an integrated NERC compliance strategy that incorporates changes in the regulatory environment. Partners with the Regulatory Relations team to effectively represent PG&E's position and interests regarding potential regulatory developments. Oversees the management of the training and compliance functions consistent with regulatory requirements and best practices.
  • Oversees the organization and execution of transmission switching processes and procedures. Ensures the processes are being followed in accordance with expectations. Develops and implements real-time problem solving.
  • Regularly interfaces with company executives to report on grid operations status and negotiation of sensitive issues.
  • Oversees the execution of outage restoration and response by ensuring that the maximum numbers of customers are restored in the safest, most efficient manner.
  • Develops department goals and ensures objectives are met. Implements efficiency and quality improvements. Monitors department performance and regularly presents status, issues, and recommendations to senior leadership including the VP and EVP levels.
  • Manages a significant department operational budget. Develops financial and staffing plans for each function of the department.
