Idaho Power is looking for Pre-Apprentice Lineworkers to join our hard-working Operations teams!
The Idaho Power Pre-Apprenticeship and Apprenticeship programs prepare the future of our workforce to provide safe, reliable, clean energy for the communities we serve.
As an important member of a line crew, Pre-Apprentice Lineworkers perform construction and maintenance work on overhead and underground distribution and transmission lines. In exchange, they earn competitive pay and benefits, on-the-job training, and the opportunity to provide our communities with a critical service.
Pre-Apprentices must demonstrate the ability to be promoted to Apprentice Lineworker through on-the-job evaluations, a lines skills assessment and performance evaluations. Pre-Apprentices are eligible to bid for full-time regular Apprentice Lineworker positions as they become available. If a Pre-Apprentice is unsuccessful in obtaining an Apprentice position within 12 months of hire, they will be released from employment.
Pre-Apprentices are required to work at multiple locations throughout our service area and on multiple line crews. Please see additional program details below.
Primary Job Duties:
- Assists in building distribution overhead and underground and/or transmission facilities
- Assists in stocking line trucks with commonly used tools, parts, and equipment. Fuels and cleans line trucks and other equipment
- Assists in maintaining inventory levels and transferring and receiving materials
- Assists in maintaining tools and equipment
- Frames poles by attaching arms, braces, and insulators per Idaho Power Guidelines
- Digs holes and assists in setting poles and anchors
- Drives and operates line vehicles and stations them properly for the work to be done
- Will climb poles once deemed capable by qualified personnel
IMPORTANT DATES:
Successful candidates will report to work on September 11, 2023.
Skills Assessments are scheduled for July 24th and 25th.
Behavioral interviews will be conducted on July 26th - July 28th.
These dates are mandatory and candidates who are not available on these dates will not be considered.
REQUIRED SKILLS
Knowledge of:
- Construction methods, materials, standards, and equipment
- Chemical safety
- Commonly encountered materials, parts, and equipment used in line construction
- IPC's service territory
- Safe work practices
- Basic mechanical and electrical knowledge
Skills in:
- Basic use of personal computers

- Perform basic arithmetic calculations

- Ability to learn and retain training provided
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Qualified candidates must be at least 18 years of age and meet the following requirements:
Education:
- High school diploma or GED
- Candidates must have graduated from a recognized Line School within the previous 18 months. On or after December 01, 2021 and no later than July 21, 2023.
- It will be required to provide the certificate of completion, at time of application or upon graduation, to be considered for the position.
- Internal candidates must have previously graduated from a recognized Line School OR have 2 years of relevant field operations experience while employed by Idaho Power OR have 3 months of Utility Laborer work experience at Idaho Power with successful completion of the Utility Laborer self-study coursework.
Experience:
- 1 year of experience performing physical or construction labor
OR
- 1 year of experience working for a utility
Prefer:
- Demonstrated experience in lines-related work
- A combination of relevant experience to include:
- Heavy equipment operation
- Commercial vehicle operation
- Electrical wiring (AC or DC)
- Construction labor
- General labor
- Use of hand tools and power tools
- Demonstrated experience working extended hours in all weather conditions
Licenses & Certifications:
- Valid Class A CDL driver's license with acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position or the ability to obtain prior to September 11, 2023.
- Valid DOT (Department of Transportation) Medical Card or ability to obtain prior to hire
- Be capable of acquiring tanker, doubles, and hazardous materials endorsements
