General Information

Reporting to the Senior Manager - Major Projects Execution, the Project Engineer - Major Projects will be part of a multi-disciplinary team responsible for providing engineering and project management on-site support in the  development, construction, and commissioning of new power generation and storage facilities. The role will also work closely with other groups and leads from Business Development, Asset Management, Operations, Finance, Commercial, Supply Chain, external EPC firms and contractors, and other internal/external stakeholders.

The Project Engineer will have strong technical, organizational, and communication skills and will develop knowledge of systems, processes and tools required to plan, engineer, and build new facilities.

Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Support and drive development of power generation and storage projects in accordance with Atura Power's Project Management practices and procedures, including FEED, detailed engineering design, construction, and commissioning.
  • Lead the development of project specifications and scopes of work that define requirements for engineering services, equipment supply and project construction.
  • Support and manage external engineering studies through FEED and detailed engineering design, technical due diligence, permitting, technical advisory, as well as developing equipment technical specifications and providing expertise and direction on overall process and system design.
  • Lead the preparation and review of models, calculations, design documents, specifications, conceptual studies, designs, reports, and proposals.
  • Develop cost estimates, decision summaries, risk analyses and conceptual plans, and preliminary and detailed design work.
  • Support projects through review of engineering design documentation from equipment manufacturers and outside consulting firms including drawings, submittals, calculations, reports and other related information.
  • Coordinate and direct the on-site work of external consultants, EPC firms, and contractors.
  • Provide on-site quality control and technical oversight during construction, commissioning activities, and performance testing.
  • Provide best practices for engineering and construction.
  • Make independent decisions and communicate recommendations to management and other affected parties in a way that fosters consensus and facilitates efficient outcomes.
  • Must have unrestricted ability to travel within North America and being away from home approximately 2-4 weeks at a time.

Qualifications

  • Exceptionally organized with demonstrated experience managing multiple competing priorities in a deadline driven environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to provide and present timely and relevant feedback/reporting to various stakeholders.
  • Working knowledge of Ontario-based HSE regulations and contract and legal agreement language, specifically pertaining to equipment supply, professional services, and project construction.
  • Experience in supporting and/or leading Process Hazard Assessments (eg. What Ifs, HAZOPS, etc.)
  • Proficient in reading and understanding drawings including P&IDs, piping isometrics, general arrangements, mechanical & civil drawings, and electrical discipline drawings including one-line diagrams and wiring diagrams.
  • Innovative, self-motivated, professional, and able to work without being under direct supervision and contribute in a fast-paced, multi-discipline team environment.
  • Possess a high level of attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Good judgment and decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to work independently to plan, coordinate, and manage multiple on-site trades, including providing daily field support.

Education/Experience

  • University degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering from a program accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board or international equivalent as recognized by the Washington Accord.
  • P. Eng. license with Professional Engineers of Ontario or an equivalent governing body in Canada is required.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive relevant field experience in power generation, oil & gas, or major infrastructure projects involved with new installations, commissioning, operations, and/or maintenance.
  • Experience specifying, installing, and commissioning power generation equipment in a regulation-heavy environment with a focus on safe execution.
  • Preference for candidates with a facility engineering and/or greenfield construction background.
  • Previous project management experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of PC-based computer systems and software applications with an emphasis on Maximo, Microsoft Excel, Word, and Project
  • Direct Maximo experience is considered an asset.
