This job is eligible for relocation assistance to aid with the costs of relocating to the Colorado Springs area.

Colorado Springs Utilities' Fuels and Purchase Power group is seeking a Senior Gas Trader to schedule, release idle transportation capacity, research, plan, and evaluate resource supply systems and economic factors to optimize resources and reliability. The successful candidate will possess advanced knowledge of gas and coal commodities markets and resources, and a drive to maintain the safety, reliability, and low-cost mission of our Utility.

A day in the life of a Senior Gas Trader may include:

  • Negotiating short-term purchases and sales and delivery contracts to ensure demand is met

  • Performing analyses to predict and plan for load, supply resources, and/or reserve obligations

  • Trading around the supply portfolio using scheduling/constraint intelligence by using excess storage capabilities to firm up arbitrage moves

  • Scheduling, routing, and confirming gas using transportation, storage, and peaking contracts on various transporting pipelines through a nomination and confirmation process

  • Ensuring daily nominations are submitted to the pipelines before FERC deadlines expire

  • Reviewing pipeline EBBs to keep the team informed of constraints or other transportation issues

  • Reconciling pipeline volume balances and reports on reasons for delivery failures

  • Developing short and mid-term gas trading strategies around our Risk Management Policy

  • Releasing excess capacity to third parties to reduce the LDC's transportation charges

  • Arranging for transportation, storage, and other services associated with sales and purchases

  • Developing and maintaining positive relationships with pipelines, suppliers, and markets to facilitate the uninterrupted flow of gas and resolve discrepancies

  • Avoiding pipeline penalties and managing imbalance differences between pipelines, storage providers, suppliers, and buyers

  • Maintaining the load forecast database daily by entering the forecast and actuals

  • Analyzing forecasted demand relative to the existing supply portfolio

  • Monitoring and collecting market intelligence impacting transportation and storage, and discussing relevant market and/or operational information with the team

Please note that this position will require participating in after-hours/weekend on-call rotation by checking for timely cycle cuts and moving gas if applicable, nominating any last cycle adjustments and communicating with Real-Time Traders, Interstate pipelines, and gas control and counterparties.

Who You Are (the following knowledge, skills, and expertise will lend to success in this role)

  • Relevant and progressively responsible experience in a power, natural gas, or related trading capacity

  • Bachelor's degree in Economics, Finance, Math, Accounting, Physics, Engineering, or a related field is valued

  • Experience with Energy Trading and Risk Management (ETRM) systems and related analytical software products

  • Experience with nominations or interstate pipelines

  • Knowledge of natural gas/coal/propane and diesel marketing principles

  • Knowledge of applicable regulations, including FERC, NAESB, and internal policies

  • Knowledge of commodity management

  • Knowledge of analytical and evaluation techniques of complex technical data
