Reporting to the Lines Supervisor, and under the direction of Lead Hands and Journeypersons, the Apprentice is responsible to learn the necessary safe work practices and procedures for the construction, maintenance and troubleshooting of energized electrical distribution systems up to 44 kV. The incumbent is responsible to work safely and efficiently as part of a crew learning under the direction of Journeyperson by completing the work as assigned.
Responsibilities:
Learn the skills and techniques to construct, maintain and operate the electrical distribution system including:
· Accept direction and learn from Supervisor, Lead Hand and Journeyperson
· Perform duties as described in the Journeyperson job description under close direction of Journeyperson
· Tasks assigned will become progressively greater with experience
· Successfully complete each level of the MEARIE training program for their respective trade
· Become proficient with the operation of the tools, equipment of vehicles associated with the trade
· Participate in emergency response and on call when deemed qualified
· Responsible for maintaining personal Log Book, and other documents related to apprenticeship program
· Successfully advance to the next level when you have achieved all of the required hours for the level, successfully completed the associated level at Line School, and demonstrate your abilities as determined by management to be consistent with the level and complete all apprenticeship requirements within a four year period.
· Responsible for a working knowledge and understanding of and make all efforts reasonable to work in accordance with and ensuring work is done in compliance with the appropriate safety legislation, EUSR rules, Alectra policies and procedures and safe work practices that apply to the work while adhering to the internal responsibility system. Reports any unsafe conditions or observed unsafe work practices using Alectra procedures.
Skills & Qualifications:
Education & Specialized Knowledge
· Successful completion of Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or recognized equivalent
· Successful completion of Power Line Technician College Program, registered in the Powerline trade or certified in a related trade
· Must hold and maintain a Class "G" driver's license in good standing, "DZ" or "AZ" driver's license is considered an asset
Experience
· Minimum of 2 years practical electrical experience or recognized equivalent
Skills/Abilities/Competencies
· Physically fit to perform position responsibilities and ability to work in adverse weather condition
· Demonstrated ability to work at heights (Apprentice Powerline Technician only)
· Demonstrated proficiency with hand tools
· Strong understanding of mechanics
· Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team
· Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills
· Demonstrated ability to solve moderately complex problems
· Demonstrated ability to proficiently operate laptop computers and computer based tools and technology
