Job Summary:

Serves as an NDE Examiner, providing technical and nondestructive inspection expertise and technical direction of work.  Assists responsible engineers in planning and conducting NDE examinations for nuclear, fossil/hydro and outside companies and industries, as required. 

Analyzes NDE examination data or results and prepares written reports and quality assurance documents attesting to component acceptance or rejection.

Applies knowledge of engineering material properties and NDE techniques, equipment and applications.   Utilizes NDE equipment for specific applications.  Interprets specifications and procedures with regard to assigned area of responsibility. 

Prepares and issues status reports for the scheduling, tracking and reporting of applicable work activities.  Interfaces with other organizations, as necessary, to gather information and prepare plans for scheduling NDE activities that meet plant requirements and schedules.

Performs surveillance of work activities of outside inspection agencies and coordinates their work efforts.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Provide technical direction to other NDE examiners of equal or lower grade as necessary.  Directs the technical efforts of outside examination agencies.

Supervision Received:

Work assignments are made by the supervisor.  NDE tasks are performed from verbal instructions and without supervision.

Skills and Proficiencies (May be job or organization specific):

Demonstrated ability to apply logic in performing various NDE techniques and interpret results.

Demonstrated ability to recognize procedural inadequacies and recommend appropriate changes that affect equipment selection and examination coverage as well as technique improvements to meet specified examination parameters.

Demonstrated communication skills; give clear direction, negotiation skills and the ability to confront difficult and adverse situations. 

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and interface with higher levels of management.

Minimum Qualifications (Consistent with Classification Standard):

Education and Experience/Certificates, Licenses, and Registration Requirements

Shall be a high school graduate or equivalent.  Shall have experience in work and specified NDE method with assignments leading to work at the Technician grade.  Must meet  applicable certification requirements for Level II in the specified test method and two level II certifications in surface examination test methods (MT, PT, VTW, VTI 1,2,3,4) or one additional volumetric discipline.  Level I volumetric examination methods (UT, ET, RT) certifications shall be equivalent to Level II surface examination certifications.

Must be able to obtain and maintain unescorted nuclear plant access and S-3 and S-4 medical qualifications when applicable.  Must be able and willing to assume "on-call" rotational assignments which may include 24 hour-a-day, 7 day-a-week availability.  Must be willing and medically able to work rotating shifts and maximum overtime permitted by TVAN procedures during peak periods.  Must be able and willing to travel to plant locations as required when performing assigned tasks and, as necessary, to be temporarily assigned to a field location.
