General Accountabilities:

  • Lead the development of effective transmission and distribution strategies that will provide guidance to the Planning organization's investment planning processes.  This includes leading technical/economic/environmental/business/regulatory research and studies to determine needs, analyze problems, evaluate alternatives and develop recommendations.
  • Lead the development of strategies focused on new innovations that will provide guidance to the Planning organization on implementing these innovations across transmission and distribution systems over a long-term planning horizon.
  • Lead the process for innovation management in order to gather, evaluate and monitor program and project proposals.
  • Provide communications to inform and promote acceptance of innovation and to support other internal work groups and divisions in the change management process. 
  • Participate in and manage participation in industry research, and work with external organizations (e.g. EPRI, CEATI, NATF) to advance emerging technologies and other innovation at Hydro One.  Develop recommendations for their adoption and support implementation plans. 
  • Be responsible for liaison with and oversee contract management related to industry organization memberships and research and innovation partnerships.
  • Provide technical guidance as required.
  • Represent the team on discussions and negotiations with external customers, stakeholders and suppliers.
  • Represent the team in the cross-functional development and implementation of standards, directives and procedures to facilitate implementation of these strategies.
  • Develop and mentor new staff.
  • Be a champion of change, and model and promote continuous innovation and improvement.

Selection Criteria
Essential Knowledge

  • Engineering knowledge of electrical and electronic theory related to the design and operation of power equipment associated with the electrical power system. 
  • Knowledge of IAMs, ORTACs, NERC working groups, and the the Regional Planning Process.
  • Knowledge of economics to carry out economic evaluations and to compare alternatives and assess results.
  • Excellent knowledge of technical writing for the preparation of reports, presentations and other communications.
  • This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired through the completion of 4 years of University training (Grade XII plus 5 years).  Additional education such as LLM, CFA, MBA or equivalent knowledge would be considered an asset.

 Essential Experience

  • Utility experience with the planning, construction, operation and maintenance of power systems
  • Experience implementing or accessing microgrids, distributed energy resources, energy storage, hybrid energy solutions, etc.
  • Experience with corporate financial business and regulatory policies, processes, and procedures. 
  • Experience to be familiar with the scope and responsibilities of the position, transmission and distribution facilities, organization and operation of related work groups, division of authority relative to the giving of advice.
  • Good working knowledge of SAP and associated software.
  • A period of over 8 years and up to and including 10 years is considered necessary to gain this experience.
  • Experience with supporting application and award of government sources of funding such as NRCan, IESO Grid Innovation Fund, etc.
  • Working experience in the following areas is preferred: Distributed Energy Resources, Non-emitting Resources, Innovation, System Operation, Energy Regulation, Electrification, Data Analysis and AI.

  • Ability to work cooperatively and develop trust and mutual respect for effective integration across multiple internal stakeholders and at multiple organizational levels.
  • Very strong organizational skills to deliver the required quality, accuracy and quantity of work.
  • A team leader with a demonstrated ability to be an agent of change.
  • Ability to manage projects and work programs with the capability to lead initiatives, as required.
