Description

The Engineer I position is the entry level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer I position solve problems in engineering areas of specialization with close supervision. An Engineer I is expected to develop skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer I have knowledge of fundamental concepts and procedures. This position is for the role of Distribution Planning Engineer within the Duke Energy Indiana service territory.  Distribution Planning Engineers perform technical analysis of the Duke Energy distribution system on voltage levels at 34.5kV and below to determine future capacity and / or performance needs to ensure that safety, reliability, and financial objectives are met.  This position supports communication across internal departments within the distribution and transmission organizations.  This position functions as the distribution system expert and provides technical support for the assigned geographic districts.

Responsibilities

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of routine problems in area of expertise.

  • Assists in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities under the guidance of higher-level employees.

  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches associated with the resolution of routine technical problems.

  • Conducts basic engineering studies requiring little evaluation or ingenuity.

  • Possesses knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures.

  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities.  Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills.  Maintains accurate records and files.

  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

  • Maintains accurate distribution system model in Cyme to support full utilization of distribution system resources, while minimizing outages, equipment damage/failure, and premature capital expenditures.

  • Perform comprehensive multi-year studies of the distribution system to identify future capacity needs.

  • Initiate and sponsor distribution and transmission capital projects to satisfy the future capacity needs of the distribution system.

  • Prepares an Annual Summary report to document peak load conditions for winter and summer peaks.

  • Provide technical support for other internal organizations.

  • Evaluate the impact of significant load additions on the system.

  • Provide recommendations and scope of work for distribution reliability and grid improvement programs.

Note: This posting is for one position. Dependent on relevant experience, the level to which a candidate is aligned is outlined below.

Basic/Required Qualifications (Engineer I)

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.

Basic/Required Qualifications (Engineer II)

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.

  • Minimum of 2 years of engineering experience

Desired Qualifications

  • Degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering

  • Minimum GPA 3.0

  • 2-4 years utility experience

  • Able to work effectively in challenging situations and under time pressure

  • Able to understand and resolve complex technical issues

  • Excellent interpersonal, teamwork, and organizational skills

  • Proven effective oral and written communication skills

  • Self-motivated with demonstrated ability to self-manage, set priorities, and establish goals

  • Experience in power system engineering applications including power system load flows

  • Educational emphasis on principles of Electric Energy Systems or equivalent experience in Power System Operations/Planning/Protection

Specific requirements

  • Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
