Become a Plant Equipment Operator at Southern California Edison (SCE) and build a better tomorrow. In this job, you'll operate and monitor diesel and combustion turbine driven generators, gas vaporization plant, tank farm, emission control systems, water desalination plant, work management system, switchyard and substation on assigned shift according to standard practices to ensure reliable electric service to all Catalina customers.

A day in the life - Get ready to think big, work smart and shine bright!
- Review and revise station orders, system operating bulletins and division orders as necessary.
- Assist the Control Operator in ensuring emissions are within environmental permit limits.
- Physically monitor fuel and other deliveries as necessary to ensure continuous operation of utility services. Record log readings for required equipment, normal shift activities, and unusual events.
- Prepare required daily and operating reports, summaries, requisitions and outage reports as necessary for the day-to-day operation of the facility.
- Conduct shift turnovers to determine the current and previous status of equipment. Utilizing previous and current operating status of equipment, determine abnormalities and take direct action to mitigate the problem to restore the systems or systems to normal status.
- Utilize a work management system to report equipment deficiencies. Ensures any changes in plant or system equipment are reported to the Control Operator.
- Report problems or emergencies to the Control Operator to allow coordination of appropriate personnel and emergency operations on required systems to protect the health and safety of the public, plant personnel and plant equipment. During emergency situations such as a fire or injury, coordinate with the Control Operator to help mitigate the emergency.
- Assist in on-the-job training for any assigned Plant Equipment Operator trainees.
- Conduct general maintenance of the facility and equipment as required.
Qualifications
The essentials
- Must pass all required tests.
- Acquire and maintain the required State certifications to monitor water utility operations within 18 months.
- Please Note: Daily commuting from the mainland to Catalina Island is not a viable option. All successful candidates must reside on Catalina.
The preferred
- Knowledge of fundamentals and principles of electricity, physics, prints, logging symbols and multifaceted facility operation consisting of gas, water and electricity generation and distribution. Comprehensive understanding of location, nomenclature and function of station equipment for the gas plant, water plant, combustion turbine, tank farm, switchyard, electrical distribution system, electrical auxiliaries, instruments, piping systems, hazardous material recognition and response requirements, accident prevention manual, system operating bulletins, division orders, station orders, switchyard and substation operations, water treatment operations, general telephone and radio operation applicable to the operation of the Catalina utilities.
- The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are of a level comparable with those normally acquired through courses taken in obtaining a high school education and training and experience in substation/switchyard operations, supplemented by specialized technical training and experience in the operation of diesel generators, combustion turbines, and liquefied gas plants.
