Position Purpose

Conduct Air Emissions Compliance and Engineering Testing and Relative Accuracy Test Audits (RATA) on Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems (CEMS) at LG&E and KU Energy Generating Stations, in your area of certification.  Assist the Air Emission Test Lead with tests in all areas required by company emissions, including reporting, notifications, and equipment certification, troubleshooting and replacement. This position will assist in the purchase of new testing equipment and the maintenance of all air emissions testing equipment.   Responsible for assisting with the scheduling, coordination, performance, and reporting of all in-house air emissions testing.  The position also includes Data QA review of CEMS data and report preparation.

Required Education & Experience

Associates degree in engineering or science and a minimum of 5 years of stack testing experience and utility experience is required, including particulate and mercury or an equivalent combination of education and experience on a year for year basis is required.  

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Environmental Science preferred.  Knowledge of USEPA air emission test methods and procedures, and CEMS monitors and equipment.  QSTI certification in Categories 1 and 3, or Category 5 is preferred.   Must be able to work in elevated locations and/or confined spaces and obtain a DOT Medical Card or Certfication.

Job Description

Ensure safety regulations are observed and all emission testing personnel (including contractors) are aware of hazards.  Report all unsafe conditions to plant manager or his designate.

Stay current with changes in regulations and procedures required for USEPA emission testing, CEMS audits, and AETBs.

Keep all test equipment certified, calibrated and up to date.

Perform all required maintenance and calibration procedures on emission test equipment. 

Ensure that CEM calibrations and annual maintenance procedures, as defined in CEMS QA Plans, are performed in advance of compliance and RATA testing programs.

Ensure that the appropriate calibration gas cylinders are available for compliance and RATA testing.

Assist with Capital and O&M Projects related to air emissions testing equipment, CEMS maintenance, change-out, upgrades and other duties as might be assigned.

Evaluate the status of all test equipment and purchase new test equipment as needed.

Conduct all air emissions testing in accordance with USEPA Reference Methods, LG&E and KU AETB Quality Manual, associated Quality Assurance and Quality Control procedures, and other regulatory agency approved procedures.

Safely mobilize equipment to each test site.

Coordinate each assigned testing event with plant management, operations, labor, dispatch, and AMT team members to assure timely schedule and an orderly testing process. 
Submit test notifications and protocols to Federal, State, and Local environmental agencies and update these external contacts appropriately when schedule changes are necessary.

Record and document all relevant compliance test data, emission test data, and file RATA Performance and Activity Sheets within five working days noting any deficiencies, problems or delays.

Coordinate and execute stack tests, coordinating the activities of the test crew up on the stack, entering the data into the reporting tool, evaluating results.  Conduct post-test sample evaluation, including:
Mercury analysis of traps
Process PM filters, pulling them, baking, weighing, and evaluating tare weights.
Titrate wet chemistry methods for testing SAM and others.

Assist plant personnel on technical matters related to CEMS QA/QC activities, including troubleshooting of sampling systems, pre-RATA preventative maintenance, and linarites. 

Assist in emission data analysis and regulatory report preparation.
