Job Summary/Purpose

The Director, HR - Labor Relations will provide strategic and tactical leadership to drive measurable results across the labor relations portion of the overall Entergy Human Resources strategy.  This position will serve as a subject matter expert, advisor, strategist, and program execution leader on key labor imperatives.  The Director will develop the short-and-long-term labor relations strategy and engage, influence and support management and HR in achieving labor relations results aligned with business goals.  This position will serve as primary labor relations leader in labor contract negotiations providing expertise on the negotiation process and compliance with labor law. 

This role reports to the Vice-President, Human Resources, and will work closely with the Human Resources Leadership Team, business leadership teams, and the greater Entergy HR community.

Job Duties/Responsibilities

  1. Oversees labor team, functions as the subject matter expert, and maintains knowledge on current and emerging developments, trends in:
  • National Labor Relation Act, collective bargaining, dispute resolution, grievance/arbitration process, strike situations
  • Negotiation strategy, economics of a labor contract, labor contract management
  • Maintaining a positive work environment, recognizing potential employee relations issues, responding to employee concerns
  • Compliance with federal and state regulations, laws regarding labor relations and human resources
  1. Oversees collective bargaining, contract administration, and dispute resolution resulting in a coordinated and effective approach. Proactively participates as a key representative in the employer-union relationship to ensure effective relations and achievement of business objectives.  Partners with the HR organization to ensure awareness of employee/labor relations issues.
  2. Recognizes potential employee relations issues and takes or recommends necessary corrective action. Monitors and administers disciplinary procedures for staff in compliance with state and federal law and company policies and procedures. Counsels managers/supervisors of corrective action.
  3. Coaches business and HR leaders and professionals on federal and state labor law, labor relations strategies, contract negotiations, creating a positive work environment.  Develops and presents training programs in the area of expertise and in areas critical to the execution of the labor relations strategy.
  4. Builds organizational capability within the Labor Relations and HR teams, and ensures top talent is hired, trained, and retained.  Responsible for leading and developing a team of Labor Relations/HR subject matter experts deliver on the desired outcomes, strategies, tactics, and SMART goals.
  5. Hires, interfaces with, and provides oversight to external consultants and vendors.  Partners with external consultants and vendors to achieve business results and reviews performance on a regular basis to ensure optimal service received.  Manages and provides oversight to external consultant and vendor contracts.
  6. Participates, contributes, and leads, when appropriate, strategic initiatives supporting the business and HR strategy.
  7. Collaboratively integrates approaches, outcomes, deliverables, and solutions with partners in HR, Legal, Finance, Regulatory, etc. for solutions to both company and industry challenges.
  8. Interfaces with Finance as primary contact for Labor Relations budget, including budget planning, measurement of results, achievement of goals and on-time accruals.

Minimum Requirements

Minimum education required of the position

Bachelor's degree in Human Resources or related field and/or equivalent work experience preferred. Masters preferred.

Minimum experience required of the position

  • 10+ years in HR or related experience with or without a degree. 
  • 5+ years leading teams, or leading programs and initiatives where the employee can demonstrate the ability to effectively influence others.
  • Minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities required of the position
  • 5+ years of exceptional ability to proactively lead and work across cross functional teams and across geographies with the proven ability to interact with employees at all levels within the organization with diverse personalities and skill levels.  Strong relationship building and collaboration skills are also required.
  • 5+ years demonstrated success in complex human resources roles with the ability to navigate ambiguity, synthesize disparate input/data, establish priorities, and lead the execution on time and on budget.
  • 5+ years demonstrated success partnering, coaching, and advising key stakeholders such as executive/business management, HR leaders, and the greater HR community on special projects, business objectives and goals.
  • Excellent communication skills including written communication, executive presentations, and stand-up speaking skills; comfortable presenting to and facilitating work with all key stakeholders.
  • Understanding of and experience in managing a department budget from the annual planning process through the achievement of financial goals.
  • External vendor management skills including request for information, request for quotes and requests for proposals resulting in agreements that are executed per the requirements.
  • Strong ability to identify and develop talent, coach, and performance-manage a team to achieve premier performance.
