Job Brief

The Senior Principal Engineer provides technical subject matter expertise to develop and maintain the engineering design and construction standards for the power delivery system.   This role provides engineering support for all distribution equipment, except streetlights and poles, with full technical responsibility for development and maintenance of the Standard Material Specifications (SM's) and SAP catalog descriptions working closely with suppliers, vendors and purchasing.  In addition, the Senior Principal Engineer evaluates the integration of new technology on the distribution system and provides failure analysis of equipment through inspections as needed. 

Job Responsibilities

  • Subject Matter Expert concerning distribution equipment and other items used by Power Delivery division
  • Defines, develops, and maintains SRP's engineering standards for the design, construction, and maintenance of distribution assets.
  • Reviews and responds to requests for changes to distribution standards and specifications and serves as a subject matter expert both internally and externally as a key point of contact for standards questions.  Provides the interpretation and practical application of standards and facilitates changes.
  • Plays a key role in integrating new technologies, equipment, and methodologies and determines impacts to the standards.
  • Acts as liaison between engineering, design, construction and maintenance groups to support and maintain distribution feedback loop with key stakeholders
  • Development and maintenance of the Standard Material Specifications (SM's), SAP catalog descriptions , approved suppliers and vendor evaluation factors, when applicable
  • Provides support to Purchasing which includes review of the proposed RFP package for standard materials, provides updated SM's, provides the evaluation and award recommendation of the RFP, and reviews and approves alternate substitute items as requested        
  • Performs failure analysis as required.
  • Provides engineering review of work performed by consultants and others.
  • Serves as a voting member of various industry committees. Participates on industry task forces as a representative of SRP.
  • Actively mentors, develops and trains engineers on technical, and/or best practices. Identifies or creates development opportunities.
  • Represents SRP in legal and regulatory matters or proceedings of a technical nature when required.

Experience

14 years professional experience actively engaged in engineering plus professional recognition.

Must have demonstrated the successful accomplishment of work as defined for this position.

Authored internal and/or external technical papers

Must have knowledge and experience in distribution design and/or construction, as well as distribution construction methods, major materials, design and construction standards and safety codes.  Exposure and working knowledge of the following standards is preferred:  AEIC,

ANSI, ASTM, NESC, NEC & OSHA.  Background in distribution design and/or construction within the utility industry and knowledge of distribution standards is preferred.

Additional Information

Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited curriculum

AND

Additional specialty training (MS Engineering, MBA, or 36 graduate level college semester hours)
OR

State Professional Engineering Registration plus additional specialty training (MS Engineering, MBA, or 18 graduate level college semester hours).

  3. Ability to develop, coordinate, and manage projects or processes, acting as project leader when required.
  4. Ability to perform both strategic and tactical work.   Capable of seeing and communicating the big picture and underlying details.
  5. Knowledge of electric system design work functions, policies, and procedures.
  6. Demonstrates substantive thought leadership to further new ideas, products, services, and/or business processes to improve safety, increase efficiency, effectiveness, and/or customer satisfaction.

If internal, candidates must attain a Valued Contributor or better rating on their annual performance review for the last three years.

Demonstrated network of internal and external contacts including customers, outside agencies, and suppliers of significant equipment and services

Occasional travel to suppliers' facilities, industry functions, and SRP facilities. Ability to work effectively with various organizations within and outside of SRP.

Must have a valid Arizona driver's license.
