Job Description
***This Distribution Reliability Engineer position is posted as a range from , Engineer (Grade 6) - Engineer Principal (Grade 9). Pay, grade, and title will be based on the experience and qualifications of the individual selected.*** (BSEE/MSEE is preferred for this opening).
Engineer, grade 6 -
- Knowledge and practice of safety procedures, switching and tagging training, use of FR clothing when required
- Basic power math, per unit, power factor, impedance conversion, voltage drop
- Develop reliability work plan. Create projects to increase reliability based on field input, outages, reliability indices, and circuit loading.
- Use of CYME software for distribution analysis, fault current, load balance, feeder voltage profile
- Work with customer design and region design scoping reliability projects and prioritizing projects
- Use ADAM and MACCS program to look up customer loads
- Review daily interruptions and create action plan to resolve issues
- Track reliability indices by feeder and OMS area quarterly. Share report with distribution.
- Schedule reliability meetings with distribution and organize yearly joint meeting with planning.
- Promote safety in engineering by insuring installed equipment rating can handle fault current.
- Develop incremental projects (projects over $250k and multi-year projects) and input these projects into the project ranking tool
- Distribution Automation support. Program DA controls and help with installation and commissioning.
- Know hand calculations for fault current, Motor start, voltage rise from cap
- Power Quality analysis utilizing PQ monitors, solving customer issues, harmonic analysis, initiating distribution projects to resolve PQ issues
- Program electronic controls: capacitors, reclosers, regulators, and auto-transfer gear. Use appropriate coordination studies and calculations.
- Use Maximo to check inventory and order material for special projects
- Maintain operations database to store equipment data, work with design to maintain fuse and switch number records
- Plan capacitor placement to provide voltage support and maintain power factor above 95% at the feeder level
- Provide technical support to construction and service crews to resolve customer and distribution issues.
- Schedule yearly circuit inspections and distribute maintenance needs to design and forestry.
Engineer Senior, grade 8,
Shall have performed the duties of and have all the qualifications of Engineer:
- Plan distribution automation program, install locations and target areas.
- Provide support for distribution automation alarms and operation issues. Interrogate controls and update firmware. Provide support for automation software programming.
- Provide training to AEP design engineers for AEP Overcurrent Protection Guide, controls and equipment, how to calculate fault currents and per unit values
- Provide technical support to design engineers on designs and equipment.
- Participate in upper levels of the service restoration plan
Engineer Principal, grade 9
Shall have performed the duties of and have all the qualifications of Engineer Sr.
- Support for material standards
- Provide response to PUC for Notice of Violation feeders and Requests for Information (RFI)
- Support and provide training for reliability engineers
- Help resolve company PQ issues in all districts
- Assist reliability manager with program budgets
Engineer
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Has typically acquired 2 or more years of related engineering experience along with a Bachelor's degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET*; Individuals with a Master's degree in engineering from an engineering program accredited by ABET* may be considered for entry into the organization at this level.
Physical demand level is Sedentary.
Engineer Sr.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Has typically acquired 6 or more years of related engineering experience along with a Bachelor's degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET*; or 4 years of related engineering experience along with a Master's degree or PhD in engineering from a program accredited by ABET*; Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in any U.S. state or Puerto Rico** is encouraged and preferred.
Physical demand level is Sedentary
Engineer Principal
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Has typically acquired 8 or more years of related engineering experience along with a Bachelor's degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET*; or 6 years of related engineering experience along with a Master's or PhD in engineering from a program accredited by ABET*. Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in any U.S. state or Puerto Rico** is required for this position unless approval to waive this requirement is given by the organization's EVP.

*ABET - Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Acceptable alternatives are (1) a Bachelor's degree in engineering (non-ABET), plus a Professional Engineers (PE) license in any state of the U.S. or (2) a Bachelor's degree in engineering (non-ABET) plus a Master's degree or PhD in engineering from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor's program.
** Confirmation is required to ensure the PE obtained in Puerto Rico aligns with NCEES standards.
