As the Distribution Controller, you will this is an entry level position that assists in supporting the service restoration process, distribution facilities maintenance, and construction activities.  It also assists distribution field personnel and maintains records of all pertinent activities and equipment status.  Additionally, this position will be responsible for updating maps, schematics, and diagrams to reflect the current distribution operations.

Specifically, you'll have the opportunity to:

  • Use computer devices and reports to analyze information about customers' service issues
  • Communicate service issues to field crews via radio and provide them with work orders
  • Monitor weather reports and other information to anticipate work load; use lightning detection device
  • Provide support via phone or radio during situations that may be hazardous or life-threatening to others
  • Coordinate switching activities between regions, System Controllers, and other departments
  • Coordinate service restoration on circuit lock-outs by integrating information from various sources to identify the source of the problem and take corrective measures (e.g., EMACS, trouble orders, field personnel)
  • Use Energy Management and Control System (EMACS) to obtain schedule of work planned at substations, view substation schematic, or remove work tags
  • Analyze and update maps, schematics, work order sketches and development plans
  • Enter data into personal computers, mainframe, and mid-tier systems, including use of graphic workstations
  • Communicate using terminology common to Transmission & Distribution and the Houston Electric network
  • Other duties and tasks may be assigned to this job at the Company's discretion

Basic Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED 

  • Applicant must pass the EEI aptitude and skills test

Preferred Experience, Education and Skills:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree computers or business related, trade skills
  • Basic computer program application experience in Microsoft products, SCADA, etc.
  • Power delivery experience (Distribution, Transmission or Substation) as a Journeyman, Foreman, Engineer or System Operator
  • Dispatching experience in routing field personnel and private radio operations.
  • Ability to monitor and control the activities and operation of multiple events simultaneously.

Additional Knowledge, Skills, Licenses/Certifications, Abilities & Personal Characteristics (KSLAPs):

  • Able to speak, read and write in English sufficiently to, interpret and communicate information regarding prints, maps, technical material, time, work management, etc
  • Able to remain calm under stressful situations
  • Able to comprehend the basic rules and principals of electricity and how field devices affect the flow of electricity
  • Able to multi task
  • Able to pass comprehensive physical examination
  • Able to stay focused in an intense environment with constant activity
  • Able to stand or sit in one position for extended periods of time
  • Able to work under close supervision and scrutiny
  • Able to remain calm under stressful conditions
  • Able to type at least 30 wpm in order to retrieve and enter data efficiently
  • Able to operate a computer and learn industry specific software
  • Ability to monitor and control the activities and operation of multiple events simultaneously.
  • Must meet Company requirements for entry into the 3 year Distribution Controller 1-3 training program and successfully advance to each level to promote into a Controller
  • Able to demonstrate commitment to compliance with applicable laws and regulations, the Company's Ethics and Compliance Code of Conduct, and other Company policies and procedures and do so consistently, take all required training courses and do so timely
  • Able to demonstrate respect for all individuals, adhere to the Company's values and business practices and do both consistently

Physical Requirements:

  • May be required to stand or sit in one position for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to view multiple computer monitors for long periods of time
  • Speak, read and write in English sufficiently to, interpret and communicate information

Working Conditions:

  • Control room environment
  • Requires working overtime (scheduled/unscheduled) and responding to call outs whenever they occur (24 hrs/day, 7 days/week)
  • Must be able to perform the above-described function(s) on a variety of shifts and schedules including 8 or 10 hour rotating shifts. (subject to change at the Company's discretion) 
  • Will be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays and be available for callout and holdover time.
  • May be required to remain in the service area during emergency events and assume responsibilities assigned by the company to aide in restoration efforts
