Job Description

AES Clean Energy (CE) is seeking a Manager of its integrating and growing Operational Technology team to support the Operations, Engineering and Construction teams by improving the reliability, availability and effectiveness of the data networks and tools that serve its rapidly growing portfolio of photovoltaic and battery storage projects.

AES CE, a subsidiary of The AES Corporation, specializes in developing, owning, and operating utility scale PV solar projects, distributed generation PV solar projects, PV solar projects combined with battery energy storage systems (BESS), stand-alone battery energy storage projects and wind generation projects. A day in the life of the AES CE Manager of Operational Technology will include, but is not limited to:

Lead and manage a team of 7 people to deliver the critical responsibilities of this team. Working cross-functionally with the engineering, construction and operations teams to establish the design standards upon which our facilities' networks will operate. Ensure the reliable and secure functioning of the SCADA systems on new and existing generating facilities. Lead the execution and enhancement of the DAS and SCADA systems in use, ensuring that data gets to the end-users in a timely, accurate manner.

The Operational Technology team, through the leadership of the Operational Technology Manager, will have holistic responsibility for portfolio's networks; from i) establishing the network standards & BOM to ii) managing and advancing the selection and integration of data management tools and iii) to managing and supporting the site communications and network infrastructure.

The Operational Technology team is supported by the existing AES IT and Cybersecurity groups, and is not responsible for desktop support, corporate and personal computers, or office networks.

The position may be based in Salt Lake City, UT or Louisville, CO and may include up to 25% travel.

Key Responsibilities

Operations Support

  • Supply advanced technical direction and leadership to the organization through the planning and implementation processes for SCADA and network systems.

  • Establish requirements, provide analysis for network and services specifications, network design, network partitioning, and network architecture definition.

  • Provide advanced expertise in the development of network test, validation, and integration plans on projects, and assurance of network integrity.

  • Perform system administrator function for the portfolio's networks; manage cyber security, provide VPN accesses and manage/optimize the communication accounts supporting the networks.

  • Ensure NERC Critical Infrastructure Protection compliance tasks are delivered in a complete and timely fashion.

  • Work closely with field services teams to troubleshoot and resolve hardware and communications issues on the portfolio's networks.

Execution Support

  • The Operational Technology team will work closely with the CE Engineering team to define the design standards, equipment and systems to be deployed in support of the growing portfolio's DAS and SCADA networks.

  • Through EPC contractors, the Operational Technology team will support CE Construction team in the execution phase of site's construction, commissioning and testing of the networks and supporting project managers in achieving schedule milestones. 

  • As the owner of the relationships for our DAS and SCADA technology providers, the Operational Technology team will ensure that the CE Engineering, Construction and Operations teams are well served through these technology solutions.

Skills and Qualifications

Primary Qualifications

  • Bachelor's in Computer Science, Engineering or Related Field

  • Minimum of 10 years working in a technically-focused role

  • Minimum of 5 years managerial experience

  • Experience working with Cisco networking equipment, SEL RTAC, SEL Relays and Energy Meters (SEL, Shark, etc.)

  • Experience working with cloud computing, data warehouses, VPN access and cyber security

  • Experience with SQL and NoSQL timeseries databases

  • Experience with remote computing and edge/IOT environments

  • Experience with industrial DAS and SCADA systems

  • Experience with SCADA communication protocols (DNP3, ICCP, MODBUS TCP/IP)

  • Experience managing budgets and business-planning

  • Strategic thinking and ability to develop and execute strategy

  • Proficiency with reading and understanding equipment, system & facility schematics

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Well versed in the use of the Microsoft Office software suite

  • High degree of commitment to a quality safety culture and an incident-free work environment

  • Willingness to travel within the U.S. to support company's portfolio of PV solar/BESS assets

  • Personal values consistent with those of the AES Corporation; Safety First, Highest Standards & All Together

"Plus" Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or Related Field

  • Cisco CCNP or other advanced network engineering certifications

  • Experience managing NERC Critical Infrastructure Protection standards and protocols

  • Experience with PV Solar, Battery Energy Storage Systems or Wind power generation

  • Spanish language skills
