Department Overview
The Electric Maintenance and Construction (M&C) Team is an integral part of our Electric Operations organization. The team is responsible for safely and reliably maintaining and constructing our overhead and underground high voltage facilities throughout the PG&E service territory of northern and central California.
The General Construction Electric Department is comprised of approximately 700 employees, tasked with the Construction and Maintenance of high voltage electrical facilities within PG&E's system. It is a mobile work force that may travel throughout PG&E's service territory to perform its work.
Position Summary
This classification is represented by IBEW Local 1245, which has over 100 years of experience representing employees at PG&E. This job is subject to collective bargaining.
We are collecting applications for positions in Maintenance and Construction in Distribution, and General Construction. Applicants will be considered based on location preference determined during the recruitment process. In addition, only applicants who have a history in PG&E service territory will be considered.

In an effort to better represent the communities we serve, candidates who live within 30 miles of the company's headquarters in the following cities will be given preference: Antioch, Concord, Richmond, Hayward, San Carlos, San Francisco, San Jose. Candidates who live within 50 miles of the company's headquarters in the following cities will be given preference: Redding/Red Bluff, Marysville, Auburn/Placerville, Rocklin, Santa Cruz, Fresno, Clearlake, Bakersfield. Paso Robles, Woodland, Aubrun, Grass Valley, Petaluma, Santa Rosa, Manteca, Stockton, Los Banos, Merced, Sonora. Candidates who live within 75 miles of the company's headquarters in the following cities will be given preference: Davis. Eligibility will be determined by the current address on application. Candidates may be required to present proof of residency during the recruitment process. Headquarters in the above mentioned may change due to business need. Current Hiring Hall candidates in the Electric Line of Progression may be given preference to their division during the selection process. Candidates may be considered for Advanced Placement in the Apprentice Lineman Program based on prior or existing experience in an IBEW sponsored apprenticeship.
An Electric Apprentice Lineman's principal duties include learning pre-requisite skills and knowledge for becoming a Lineman. As an Apprentice, you will be required to attend and successfully complete the Apprenticeship Program, which includes formal training and assessments. You will also be required to achieve a set of on-the-job training objectives. During the Apprenticeship Program, employees must pass training courses that include but are not limited to the following:
- Climbing utility poles and steel structures
- Basic Electricity and Protective grounding principles
- Basic Rigging and other physical skills requirements
- Attend Class "A" driving school and obtain a Class "A" Driver's License (must obtain Class "A" Driver's Permit by month 3 and License after month 6 and before the end of the successful completion of the first year of the Apprentice Lineman program)
Employees in this position will complete a 12-month probationary period. Upon successful completion of the probationary period, Apprentice Linemen will begin the formal program towards becoming a Journeyman Lineman.
This position is a DOT (Department of Transportation) covered classification. Holders of a Class A permit or Class A license are subject to DOT-regulated pre-employment background verifications and pre-employment and random drug and/or alcohol screening.

Job Responsibilities
- Perform work while assisting a Journeyman or higher step Apprentice in all aspects of construction of our high voltage facilities
- Under direction, assists in overhead and underground line construction and maintenance and other miscellaneous work
- Field clerical duties for various crews
- Drive a truck and maneuver it at the job site as required in connection with the maintenance, construction and operation of overhead and underground electrical facilities.
- Assist with ground work
- Exert continuous muscular force for a short period of time to lift, lower, and pull heavy objects (e.g., a wooden pole) using a rigging system, and to lift and hold large power tools such as a chain saw, power drill, hydraulic press, or hydraulic tramp
- Use a computer, which includes basic word processing and e-mail programs
- Maintain tools and material on truck in good order
- Operate associated mechanical equipment on the truck
- Drive all-terrain vehicles
- Install work area protection
- Other appropriate duties as assigned
- Will be required to work at various heights
- Lift maximum of 74 pounds above waist and 112 pounds below waist a minimum of one time a day
Qualifications
Minimum:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must possess a High School diploma or GED
- Must possess a valid California Driver's License or ability to obtain one prior to start date
- Must obtain a valid CA Class A Driver's License Permit and DMV Medical Card within 3 months of hire and CA Class A Driver's License and DMV Medical Card within 6 months of hire.
- Able to work in all types of weather extremes
- Able to drive in all weather and road conditions
- Able to work extended hours, nights, weekends and holidays
- Must be able to wear company provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Must weigh less than 300 pounds
- Must be able to lift maximum of 74 pounds above waist and 112 pounds below waist a minimum of one time a day
- Must be able to pass a Post-Offer Physical Assessment as a requirement of the pre-employment process
- Internal PG&E Employees must be able to pass Three-Day Climbing Course as a requirement of the pre-employment process
Desired:
- Graduate of an acknowledged lineman college
- Currently in an apprentice lineman program at another utility or municipality
- Graduate of a PG&E PowerPathway Program
- Electrical field experience in the military
- Electric construction experience at PG&E as an internal employee or through the Hiring Hall
- Electric construction experience, especially at a utility or municipality
- Tree climbing/trimming work experience
- Telecom pole climbing experience
- Tower climbing experience
- Completion of applicable trade school certification program or courses
- Military work experience
- Experience working at heights
- Associates degree or higher
- Additional consideration may be given to applicants with experience in civic/volunteer work, heavy equipment, firefighting, physical work background, flagging, CPR/EMT certification, OSHA certification, bi-lingual.
