Primary Purpose:
Meteorology provides a critical role in identifying dangerous fire weather conditions and communicating the impacts to the company. Specifically, Meteorology provides a daily operational weather forecast and Fire Potential Index that affects how SDG&E operates the grid on a daily basis. This role will be responsible for providing short- and long-term seasonal weather forecasts to allow preparedness and proactive resource availability in the case of pending severe weather.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Integrates meteorological data to provide continuously updated weather information to better manage the impacts of weather on the electric system and identify vulnerabilities. Updates and analyzes operational forecast products. Supports operational clients with emphasis on short-range prediction. Supports projects and development of analytical tools. Maintains and enhances procedures for monitoring and alerting. Assists in real-time/operational forecast process improvements. Monitors company owned weather stations and ensures successful data collection. Provides daily weather reports and forecasts to company personnel.
- Monitors and reports real-time weather conditions and expected forecasts on a recurring basis during weather events and major construction operational events. Provides short- and long-term seasonal weather forecasts to allow for preparedness and proactive resource availability in the case of pending severe weather. Prepares and disseminates non-routine operational weather reports prior to, during, and after significant weather events including Santa Ana winds, winter storms, heat waves, and thunderstorm outbreaks.
- Supports the development of analytical tools for SDG&E operations and the Wildfire Mitigation Plan. Attends various internal and external meetings related to weather as a subject matter expert. Plays an active role in training and evaluations during company drills and actual weather events. Continually maintains and enhances procedures for monitoring SDG&E's weather network and associated alerting. Improves all real-time and operational forecasts through process improvements via new technologies and advancements.
- Develops 15, 30, 60 and 90 day climate outlook forecasts for the service territory utilizing various information sources and atmospheric outlook models. Provides information relating to temperature predictions, precipitation likelihood and potential long range atmospheric conditions.
- Participates in internal staff meetings for continual safety program improvement and fire preparedness plan development. Attends various internal and external meetings related to weather, including National Weather Service and Calfire weather meetings.
- Performs other duties as assigned (no more than 5% of duties).
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree atmospheric science, environmental sciences or equivalent.
- Working knowledge of meteorological processes, climatology, forecasting techniques, and weather model analysis.
- Proficiency in data management skills to efficiently complete studies and visually demonstrate findings that utilize data from disparate sources in various forms. Intermediate
- Strong forecasting, communication skills and analytical skills for Electric Operations Center activations.
- Must be proficient in the use of applications and tools (e.g., Word, Access, PowerPoint, Microsoft Project, etc.) to provide project management, leadership, and/or updates and presentations.
- Demonstrate solid interpersonal and communication skills.
Desired Qualifications:
- 2 years - experience in meteorological operations is desired.
