Position Summary

Transmission Operator position is a crucial part of the System Operations team. They are responsible for the safe and reliable operations of the CPS Energy Bulk Electric System including Transmission, Substation and Distribution assets. A Transmission Operator will be required to work both the Transmission and Distribution Operations desk. Duties shall include dispatching, monitoring of system conditions, regulation of system parameters, issuing of clearances, issuing work orders, outage coordination, system logging and operation of CPS Energy's SCADA/EMS systems. Also, required to work outside of their regular scheduled rotating shift as needed, including during storms and major events. A comprehensive knowledge of NERC Standards, ERCOT Operating Guides and Protocols, leadership skills, and problem solving is critical to System Operations and for reliable customer service that drives CPS Energy's success.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Operates and controls electric and gas equipment such as capacitor banks, transformers, breakers, gas regulators and valves in a safe, reliable and economical manner with minimum supervision.
  • Directs and coordinates field switching, procedures and clearances ensuring the safety of CPS personnel and the general public.
  • Recommends operational improvements and communicates system events to appropriate personnel.
  • Operates Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Energy Management System (EMS), GIS Mapping System, Outage Management
  • System (OMS) as well as radio and telephone systems.
  • Analyzes and acts promptly in cases of system disturbances so the system can be restored to a normal state.
  • Provides technical analysis, monitors system conditions, schedules and authorizes distribution equipment outages and load transfers.
  • Monitors crew locations for their safety and disable automatic recloser relays if applicable.
  • Prepares Switching procedures and clearances for the distribution and transmission system.
  • Assigns and directs switching activities and work assignments to trouble crews and switching personnel.
  • Monitors weather conditions and coordinates staffing requirements by calling additional resources to handle emergencies.
  • Proficiently and efficiently utilizes various software applications.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Skills

  • Personal Computer Usage

Minimum Knowledge and Abilities

  • Extensive knowledge of interconnected system operations and coordination characteristics.
  • Ability to analyze and coordinate multiple system conditions and outages.
  • Capable of working rotating shifts, including weekends, holidays and all required overtime.
  • Extensive knowledge of switching procedures and safety practices.
  • Proficiency with all components and equipment utilized in operating and maintaining a reliable distribution and transmission system.
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing with internal and external customers.

Preferred Qualifications

Associate's or Bachelor's degree

Please note:  ERCOT Certification is PREFERRED not required
