About the Opportunity

This is an open position with Fort Martin Power Station,  MonPower, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. [FOS]

The Yard Operator performs duties in connection with the operation and maintenance of equipment associated with power generation in the bulk material department.

Duties:

  • Assisting in the operation, surveillance, greasing, maintenance and cleaning of bulk material equipment such as bulldozers, belt and screw conveyors, conveyor drives, coal and lime feeders, coal and lime crushers, coal and lime sampling systems, lime unloader, pumps and other related equipment.
  • Assisting in coordinating operational functions with those employees assigned to the Bulk Material Crew, carrying out instructions of the Yard Supervisor or Production Supervisor.
  • Assisting in the duties of other Yard Operators or other less skilled personnel.
  • Demonstrating a solid commitment to all aspects of safety.
  • Performing independently or with others to assure efficient, dependable operating condition of bulk material equipment.
  • Maintaining lubrication, filtering and other requirements of plant equipment.
  • Demonstrating sound internal and external customer service.
  • Checking with other Yard Operators being relieved for special orders and operating conditions; checking the operation and condition of equipment upon going on duty.
  • Monitoring closely equipment conditions and troubleshooting equipment and system issues.
  • Maintaining computerized and written equipment condition logs and repair information.
  • Assisting in the preparation and performance of special and routine tests.
  • Operating safely the machine tools, hand tools and rigging necessary to perform the duties of this level. - Receiving instruction and training to qualify for maintenance cross-training.
  • Performing, directing or assisting in the performance of any task assigned for continuity or restoration of service in an emergency.
  • Maintaining work areas and equipment in a neat, clean and presentable condition, including minor maintenance of equipment, i.e., lighting and painting.
  • Carrying out the defined roles and responsibilities for this position pertaining to the control activities for the environmental issues and fuel management.

Qualifications

  • Applicants must possess a valid driver's license and have completed a two-year technical or applied science degree from an accredited college or the equivalent. The degree must be associated with a field of endeavor applicable to Fossil power plant operations. Candidates may apply and be considered provided they have attained any one or more of the following equivalencies:
  • A combination of related course work in an approved program and a certification in Heavy Equipment / Machinery Operation.
  • A FirstEnergy-approved journeymen program from another company.
  • Three years' experience in power plant coal handling or related material / aggregate handling industries. -Military experience in any branch of the United States Armed Services applicable to material handling and / or heavy equipment operation. 

Additional Qualifications include:

  • Must pass the Plant Operator Selection System (POSS) and Power Plant Maintenance Positions Selection System (MASS) tests.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift weights up to 50 pounds, as well as perform heavy physical work.
  • Ability and willingness to work in high places, confined spaces, over and near water.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to operate motor vehicles safely.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment including self-contained breathing apparatus.
  • Ability and willingness to work assigned rotating shifts, overtime, holidays, and weekends.
  • Must participate in the Loss Control Team
  • Strong mechanical skills, abilities, aptitude and work experience for power station work.
  • Must have a working knowledge of the safe use of tools used for routine repairs.
  • Ability to work well with others and perform group work tasks.
  • Self-motivated to work alone and without direct supervision.
  • Must demonstrate a questioning attitude to learn, produce results, and develop relationships.
  • Work outdoors in a wide range of temperatures with frequent walking, occasional standing, bending and climbing stairs
