JOB OVERVIEW
Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a strategic and results-driven leader to join our Energy Markets team in the role of Senior Manager, Origination, located in downtown Toronto.
Reporting to the Director, Energy Markets, the Senior Manager, Origination will be responsible for establishing and developing relationships, identifying growth opportunities, and negotiating non-standard power, capacity, and environment deals across the Northeast and Midwest regions. You will work with counterparties and ISO/RTOs and collaborate with the trading and strategy & commercial markets team to collectively meet and exceed profitability targets for wholesale origination.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Legacy Agreement Management:
- Manage a portfolio of transactions to maximize stakeholder value surrounding power-related agreements entered into with jurisdictions outside of Ontario;
- Ensure all transactions are done in strict accordance with the risk management controls authorized by the Risk Oversight Committee, and in accordance with Board direction and authority; and
- Renegotiation of Legacy Agreements, as required, to ensure operational and transactional limitations are captured in the agreements.
Wholesale Origination:
- Establish relationships and negotiate and manage non-standard (i.e. swaps, tolling, etc.) power sales/purchase contracts and agreements (new and existing) with generating companies, brokers, marketers, ISO markets, and other agencies in Canada and the US;
- Negotiate and structure the sales of environmental attributes (e.g. Renewable Energy Credits) associated with OPG's generating assets, Power Purchase Agreements (PPA), and emission credits (e.g. CO2);
- Pursue business opportunities; develop industry contacts to gain sale/purchase intelligence;
- Manage the operating and commercial relationships with other generating companies, marketers, ISO markets, and other agencies;
- Ensure that relationships and transactions are managed in accordance with OPG's policies, risk management controls and in accordance with Board direction and authority;
- Develop and manage, in coordination with Regulatory Affairs and other OPG support areas, relevant market monitoring and compliance activities for Energy Markets; and
- Liaise and coordinate all counterparty risk and taxation documentation and conformation issues for the business.
Trading Business Development:
- Leverage commercial capabilities and knowledge in the industry to, provide commercial strategic direction and coordinate the development of any new and potential business opportunities;
- Manage the development of new products and entry into new markets including navigation of OPG approval process;
- Participate in relevant ISO committee meetings to promote OPG's interests;
- Lead the development of proposed transactions to facilitate execution while minimizing market, legal, credit, and operational risks;
- Develop, coordinate, implement and manage umbrella agreements with pools, utilities, exchanges, brokers, marketers, transmission providers and ensure the necessary internal and external approvals are obtained;
- Coordinate and lead IT-related work in relation to Trading & Origination;
- Analyze and coordinate the development of trading systems and tools;
- Assist the Director, Energy Markets in the development, coordination, documentation, and communication of the Wholesale Marketing Strategy for OPG and the preparation of the business plan and regulated rate submissions as required;
- Stay abreast of industry and regulatory changes across the different markets;
- Build and maintain key relationships with external stakeholders/partners and internally through a strong network of contacts;
- Ensure staff are fully engaged and aligned to business goals and objectives. Promote collaboration and teamwork instilling expectations of excellence and personal best performance. Provide a safe, healthy, and positive working environment; and
- Provide oversight of gas commodity trading function, ensuring timely and effective support for gas procurement function.
EDUCATION
- Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Math, Engineering, Science, Economics or Business Administration; and
- Master's of Business Administration (MBA) or Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation is considered an asset, but not required.
QUALIFICATIONS
We are seeking a strategic and results-driven leader who has the following:
- Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in; Energy and Wholesale Origination, Energy Trading and/or Energy and Power Advisory;
- Strong ability to identify and execute on new opportunities in the energy market; create new products, develop new strategies that are commercially viable offerings and solutions;
- Strong understanding of energy markets; supply and demand, competitive market intelligence, etc.;
- Competency and Knowledge of North American electricity and gas fundamentals;
- Proven drive for results; demonstrate solid judgment with a strong business acumen with a proven track record of achieving success, and exceeding profitability targets;
- Experience and exposure negotiating power sale/purchase contracts while working with multiple internal and external stakeholders;
- Proven research and commercial analysis experience; ability to assess opportunities, identify risks and make recommendations on priorities;
- Strong problem-solving skills to address and overcome current and future challenges. A strong drive and a high level of energy, commitment, and enthusiasm to take on complex and challenging situations in a dynamic organization;
- Possesses exceptional organizational skills and strong attention to detail;
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to influence and communicate effectively;
