General Accountabilities:

Is capable of performing all or part of the following duties depending upon the need of the job.

  • Issues and returns stock items, including emergency stock, and records the transactions by proper coding and verifying accounting distribution.
  • Maintain economic inventory levels by:
    • taking physical inventory
    • reconciling variances
    • locating material lost in transit.
  • Maintains security of stores and adjacent facilities.
  • Determines, and prepares surplus declarations for material which is to be scrapped or declared surplus.
  • Maintains records of returnable material, including cable reels, by keeping accurate record cards.
  • Arranges with transport companies for shipping of material, ensuring correct placard, and preparing bills of lading for same. Prepares claim forms for material damaged or lost in shipment.
  • Maintains records in appropriate systems to record movements of meters.
  • Assembles and issues stores material (including cutting and parting), from work orders and pick lists.
  • Carries out good housekeeping, minor maintenance, inspections and fire prevention practices for materials and equipment used in the performance of his/her work.
  • Dismantle (or arrange dismantling of) components from minor equipment for return to stock.
  • Responsible for the safe handling, storage and labelling of hazardous material, including hazardous waste, in accordance with Corporate policies and procedures and government regulations.
  • Arrange for testing and or calibration of electrical safety blankets, high voltage gloves, hot sticks, various instruments, jigs, hoists, or other equipment and tools that are maintained in inventory for use by field trades.
  • Performs any other duty within the intent of the Preamble of the Occupational Definition.

Supervisory Duties:

Planning

  • Schedule and plan the assigned work program of his/her crew.
  • Adjust his/her operation according to work force available, inclement weather, traffic conditions, property owner requests, etc.
  • Plan inspection and appraisal of the condition of plant or equipment involved in his/her assigned jobs and make recommendations to his/her supervisor.
  • Assist his/her supervisor in long range planning.
  • Plan details of work in conjunction with other UTS Level 2's with respect to immediate and future requirements.
  • Notify supervisor of requirements for staff developments.
  • Reschedule and reorganize jobs to meet emergency or unexpected situations and advise supervisor at first opportunity.
  • Keep his/her crew informed of future plans.

Coordinating

  • Shall co-ordinate the activities of his/her crew(s) with other crews, other organizations or the public.

Reporting

  • Arrange for all necessary reports for his/her crew on all projects in which they are involved.
  • Review reports submitted by subordinates to assist him/her in making decisions on action to be taken. When practical, review written accident reports with individuals concerned before submitting to higher supervision.
  • Report to higher supervision problems beyond his/her authority to correct as well as those in which he/she requires guidance.
  • Prepare oral or written appraisals of tradespersons under his/her jurisdiction.

Assigning

  • Assign members of his/her crew to specific operations for training in trade skills.
  • Assign tools and equipment to his/her crew(s).
  • Assign tradespersons to jobs under his/her supervision based on their trade classifications, skills and ability.
  • Assign work to his/her crew(s).

Work Methods

  • Responsible for keeping crew up-to-date on all work methods and policies of which he/she is aware.
  • Analyze and choose most efficient work method and crew size for his/her work program or job.
  • Evaluate recommendations from his/her crew on improved work methods.

Materials

  • Instruct crew on characteristics, application, relative cost and procurement of materials.
  • Recommend most efficient methods of material handling and distribution to his/her supervisor.
  • Initiate and approve routine forms for obtaining materials.

Selection Criteria:

  • Must have a Grade XII or equivalent.
  • Five years experience in, all phases, of equipment handling, storage and transportation of power equipment, i.e., instrument transformers, meters, relays, metering units, etc. and associated components/equipment. 
  • Must have demonstrated leadership ability, a high standard of safety and efficiency, and applied knowledge of job planning, the Hydro One Safety Rules and the Trades Supervisory Criteria and Responsibility Matrix.
  • Previous experience in a supervisory position, either as a UTS or gained through prolonged step-up would be a definite asset. 
  • In making this selection, primary consideration will be given to personal qualities such as leadership, reliability, demonstrated sound judgment, ability to organize and instruct and an understanding of the practice of positive human relations.
