Job Summary
An Engineer I or Engineer II in Substation Engineering: Standards & Project Execution Support will be responsible for:
- Developing technical requirements that represent a global approach to the standardization of engineering and design requirements.
- Supporting the Design Modernization initiatives in Substation Engineering (one-line modernization and transition to Inventor 3D, AutoCAD Electrical, and Civil 3D).
- Supporting Dominion Energy's construction processes, and goals for long term ownership of substations during the development of substation design standards.
- Developing and documenting engineering and design requirements relating to the application of equipment in substations (examples of substation equipment: circuit breakers, instrument transformers, large power transformers, and miscellaneous yard cabinets and components).
- Developing processes that are technical and/or operational focused, in support of project execution processes, construction processes, and goals for engineering and design standards that drive strong reliability and performance.
- Executing engineering studies in support of developing strong substation design standards (Physical Electrical and/or P&C focused).
- Developing training for design engineers and partner groups in Electric Transmission and Electric Distribution, relating to engineering and design principles and standards that relate to the required physical and electrical infrastructure of a substation.
- Reviewing existing materials, components, and design standards for process improvements, cost savings, and help manage organizational change.
- Developing a strong understanding of company procurement processes and procedures, and serve as the business unit representative during the purchase of substation materials and components.
- Developing and maintaining substation purchase specifications for material and components required during the design of substations (Physical Electrical and P&C).
- Engaging in industry forums, and events (IEEE, SEE, CIGRE, etc.).
- Engaging with industry suppliers and manufacturers (plant/factory visits, substation visits) for assigned materials and components.
- Providing direct input into reliability project plans.
- Performing other duties as requested or assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
Engineer I: 0 - 2 years of relevant engineering experience in Substation P&C Engineering, Substation Engineering, System Protection Engineering, or demonstrated equivalent in electrical design
Engineer II: 3+ years of relevant engineering experience in Substation P&C Engineering, Substation Engineering, System Protection Engineering, or demonstrated equivalent in electrical design
Knowledge of engineering concepts, fundamentals and theory
Oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing)
Effective decision making skills
Knowledge of various computer applications, with the ability to manipulate personal computer applications and perform engineering calculations using applicable software programs (e.g. Word, Excel, etc.)
Analytical and abstract thinking skills
Problem solving skills
Ability to learn to apply engineering theories and concepts to complex problems
Ability to interpret codes, regulations and practices
Ability to develop effective planning, project and organization skills
Ability to develop project management skills and to handle multiple tasks
Ability to work within a team environment
Experience using Microstation or AutoCAD is a plus.
REQUIRED ENGINEERING CRITERIA:For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met:Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an ABET accredited engineering program based on the year that the engineering program was accredited by ABET, orPossess a 4-year engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, orPossess a 4-year engineering degree from a non-ABET accredited program and a post-graduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, orPossess a 4-year degree in Physics, Chemistry or Math and a post-graduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, orHolds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
