Position overview

The Senior Automation, Controls and Protection Engineer will be a key member of the Substation Demonstrations team in the Transmission and Distribution Business unit and will be expected to make significant contributions towards realizing business unit goals and be an industry recognized subject matter expert in Automation and Controls by making recommendations on technologies, systems and equipment that will have a long-lasting impact on reliability, efficiency, safety and cost effectiveness of SCE systems.

The successful candidate should understand new relevant technologies on the horizon and use that knowledge to support Grid Modernization now and in the future. The successful candidate should understand methodologies for implementation which will impact budget, scope and abilities to meet key milestones, and develop new SCE standards (design, construction, O&M, training documentation, etc.). Among the technical responsibilities, this role will also be in charge of building relationships with stakeholders, field personnel and vendors necessary to the success of this role.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Develop, implement and test power systems protection and controls technologies.
  • Provide subject matter expertise in the development of the next generation substation protection, controls and automation systems.
  • Lead and manage a range of development and small-scale implementations for T&D equipment, protection & automation systems, control systems, and communications technologies. 
  • Partner with internal stakeholders such as IT, Cybersecurity, technical field experts, and Engineering to specify, evaluate, test and deploy substation technology demonstrations.
  • Provide subject matter expertise, guidance and training to the Substation Demos team.
  • Building relationships with stakeholders, field personnel and vendors.
  • Monitor and identify technology development in order to evaluate their viability.
  • Identify and resolve issues related to a projects' development and implementation success.
  • Serve as Subject Matter Expert, internally and externally, on the T&D equipment, Protection & Automation systems, control systems, and communications technologies.  Acts on SCE's behalf to ensure that new product(s) meet SCE specifications and testing requirements.
  • Present findings and recommendations to management and stakeholders on viability of technologies and their impacts on SCE systems.  Recommend new technologies, systems and equipment to address issues facing SCE.
  • Actively participate and provide subject matter expertise to external groups and entities such as IEEE, UCA, and other efforts where SCE presence is required to drive new technologies and processes.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications

  • Must have a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering
  • Nine or more years of engineering experience
  • Demonstrable experience integrating and testing power systems automation and control systems
  • Working knowledge of Power Systems Protection

Desired qualifications

  • Demonstrable experience developing power systems protection schemes.
  • Demonstrable experience implementing IEC 61850 standards including GOOSE and Sampled Values
  • Working knowledge of communications networks and protocols
  • Demonstrable experience interpreting and/or designing electrical one-line, elementary, and protection logic diagrams
  • Familiarity with SCE system protection practices, philosophies, and standards
  • Familiarity with SCE substation design standards
  • M.S. Engineering (Electrical or Mechanical)
  • P.E. License
  • Demonstrable abilities for effective resource and project planning, decision making, results delivery, team building and the ability to stay current with relevant technology and innovation.
  • Demonstrably strong ethics, influence & negotiation skills, leadership, interpersonal skills, strong communication and the ability to effectively manage stress and engage in continuous learning
