JOB SUMMARY:

The Portfolio Delivery Manager (PDM) is responsible for managing a team of 14 - 20 program and project managers for a portfolio of medium and high-complexity programs and projects within the Power Delivery, Security, Southern Power and LINC functions. This position is responsible for ensuring program and project managers deliver on-time, on-budget and within defined specifications. This position also provides project portfolio management (PPM) services to multiple business functions. This position is responsible for making sure functional PPM processes and strategies are defined and available to portfolio stakeholders. The Portfolio Delivery Manager leads the project portfolio review process for multiple business units to include pipeline, active and completed projects. In addition, this manager is accountable for ensuring that project, program, and portfolio management processes and methods are followed, and that portfolio financials, risks and interdependencies are identified and managed. This position is responsible for maintaining alignment of functional PPM strategies with enterprise processes. The manager leads the creation and implementation of value delivery frameworks across the enterprise. The manager is expected to be visible and engaged throughout the portfolio and this position interfaces directly with all levels of leadership.

This is a manager position with responsibility for forecasting resource demand, hiring/staffing resources and managing the performance of a team of program managers and project managers. This position is also responsible for developing and managing a departmental budget of up to $4 million.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree highly desirable
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) or Project Portfolio Management (PfMP) certification preferred
  • Management experience preferred
  • Exhibits transformational leadership skills with a proven track record of challenging the status quo.
  • Sophisticated change management capabilities, including the ability to lead and manage through change. Should be recognized as a change agent.
  • Demonstrated ability to connect the dots and apply sound business judgement.
  • A minimum of 5 years' experience managing multiple medium/high complexity projects in a matrix resource environment, working with diverse project sponsors across multi-company and business units
  • Experience managing a diverse portfolio of technology projects using Agile, Iterative and Waterfall methodologies
  • Knowledge of project portfolio management industry trends and experience managing portfolios of interdependent or interrelated projects
  • Proven leadership in managing multi-company, cross functional teams and/or projects
  • Analytical skills are required to effectively manage activities related to budgeting, forecasting, monitoring, process management, risk management, quality control and reporting
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and experience, leveraging these skills to interact with all levels of management
  • Effective interpersonal skills required to develop and maintain system-wide and external relationships
  • Strong negotiation and influencing skills
  • Knowledge of IT infrastructure and application architectures is desired
  • High-level of proficiency in Microsoft Office products, particularly Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Project

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Forecast staff needs and skills to ensure proper recruitment, training and development of project management staff to meet current and future needs of the project portfolio
  • Provide work direction, resource management and staffing prioritization for 10-16 Program and Project Managers related to specific project goals, project management competencies and appropriate process adherence
  • Provide leadership and oversight to ensure the success of the projects assigned to a team of program and project managers
  • Manage performance and employee development for the program and project managers
  • Provide guidance and approval of the health recovery process and documentation for programs and projects in the portfolio
  • Leads the portfolio management processes for one or more business units, reporting on the size, health and state of the portfolio to all levels of management
  • Provides mentoring, coaching, training and skills assessments related to project management competency and to other project managers throughout the Southern Company System
  • Develop and leverage relationships with all levels of staff and management throughout the Southern Company system
