Community Development Specialist

This position is responsible for building and maintaining strong relationships with external stakeholders, promoting Alabama Power Company programs and initiatives within local communities, and assisting with the continued growth, development, and revitalization of towns and cities  This position will work in close partnership with Division Vice-Presidents, Area Managers, Government & Community Relations Managers, the Community Relations Specialist, and other internal groups as needed.  This position will also assist external organizations with submitting grant applications, help identify and develop community partnerships, coordinate and Implement employee and community outreach efforts, and other responsibilities in support of the Division's external strategy. 

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

 Education:

  • BS/BA degree is preferred 

Experience:

  • Demonstrates a high level of professionalism

  • Models company behaviors of customer focus with strong teamwork skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with different levels of management, employees and external customers
  • Experience working with community organizations and their leadership is preferred
  • Experience in at least one of the following areas preferred:  community affairs, corporate communications, customer service, economic development, government relations, marketing
  • Experience with volunteer coordination is preferred

Knowledge/Skills/Attributes: 

  • Requires excellent oral and written communication skills that develop effective working relationships
  • Ability to build and maintain strong community relationships with governmental, community and non-profit groups.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong internal relationships with those at all levels and with different departments within Alabama Power
  • Effective problem-solving abilities are desired
  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of ethical behavior in both job-related and personal activities to create a high level of trust and credibility with the community
  • Flexibility to changing demands and priorities is required
  • Availability to attend events after standard working hours
  • Ability to maintain a controlled demeanor, composure and objectivity when confronted with difficult issues 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinate and implement employee and community outreach efforts and promote employee community involvement
  • Work closely with Corporate Public Relations and Communications to distribute important corporate messages
  • Work with elected and community leaders for strategic planning
  • Provide opportunities for both employees and community organizations to learn about Alabama Power programs and services
  • Advise employees and community volunteers of ways to improve strategies, techniques and participation
  • Work to initiate new strategies to improve existing programs and projects
  • Partner with the Alabama Power Foundation to promote grant opportunities throughout the respective division.
  • Assist organizations with submitting grant applications
  • Identify and develop community partnerships to promote and implement Alabama Power programs involving local businesses and community organization
