Emera Inc. is looking for an enthusiastic, ambitious, and results-oriented articling student to join the legal team in our Halifax, Nova Scotia headquarters.  This position will include three consecutive three month rotations with the following affiliates within the Emera group:

  • Emera Corporate

  • Nova Scotia Power

  • Emera Energy

To help ensure a well-rounded experience, the final three months of the articling year will consist of a secondment arranged by Emera at McInnes Cooper, a leading Atlantic Canadian firm.

Emera and its affiliates offer a fast-paced in-house legal department that is a perfect opportunity for a student interested in the energy field and in experiencing an in-house work environment.  The student will rotate through different legal teams within the Emera group, gaining a one of a kind experience in Atlantic Canada.

Working closely with our teams of in-house lawyers, Emera will keep our articling student challenged with a wide variety of work, while providing exposure to our businesses.  This is a perfect opportunity for an ambitious and confident student who wants to take on challenges and broaden their experience. 

As the successful candidate, you will have the opportunity to assist in a variety of work assignments which may include:

  • Corporate transactions;

  • Commercial work, including the purchase and sale of various goods and services, commodity (natural gas and power) agreements, real estate, electricity purchase and sale arrangements;

  • Significant exposure to contract negotiations and drafting;

  • Advice on legislation, regulations, licenses, permits and approvals governing our operations;

  • Securities filings;

  • Preparing for and attending hearings before various administrative tribunals, including the Nova Scotia Utilities and Review Board;

  • Advising on compliance issues that arise in relation to our businesses; and

  • Research and legal drafting.

Skills, Capabilities & Experience:

Preference will be given to candidates with strong academic performance, particularly in business law courses, an interest in the energy field, and the following skills and experience:

  • A results-oriented focus is essential, as is the ability to work in a fast-paced changing environment and effectively manage several projects simultaneously;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills: ability to influence and communicate effectively across the company and externally at all levels;
  • Dedication to teamwork and an eagerness to engage and collaborate;
  • Strong analytical, research and problem solving skills, with a keen eye for detail;
  • Proven ability to work in a complex, regulated corporate environment;
  • Superior writing skills including the ability to compile information from research, case files or verbal direction, in order to draft documentation;
  • Sound professional and business judgment;
  • Confidence and a willingness to take on new challenges;
  • Proficient with the use of information technology tools.
