Description

Primary responsibilities include conducting field sampling necessary to meet compliance with the Endangered Species Act, Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, Migratory Bird Treaty Act, FERC Hydro licenses, and Corp of Engineer's regulations related to wetlands on linear Transmission construction projects. In addition, team biologists interact frequently with State and Federal regulators and environmental NGO's to ensure APC compliance and promote environmental stewardship and conservation. This position will support all areas of biological field sampling.

Major Job Responsibilities:

  • Assist with river and stream surveys and water quality studies
  • Perform threatened and endangered species surveys
  • Perform wetland delineations including plant and soils identification
  • Provide technical problem-solving expertise for animal concerns (nesting birds, eagles, ospreys, hawks, etc.)
  • Performing river and small stream surveys for fish, macro invertebrates, snails and Mussels
  • Work in nature (woodlands, on large bodies of water, around various animals that could pose a threat, etc.) under extreme weather conditions
  • Actively involved with relevant professional societies and organizations including Alabama Chapter of The Wildlife Society, Alabama Tortoise Alliance, American Fisheries Society, etc.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with regulators (COE, USFWS, ADCNR, ADEM, USFS) as well as various non-governmental organizations, contractors and consultants

Candidates with the following preferred qualifications are encouraged to apply:

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree (Biology, Fisheries, Wildlife Science or Zoology, or related field) required
  • M.S. in aquatic biology or related field preferred

Experience

  • Minimum of two years' experience with demonstrated performance within the areas assigned
  • Experience with the collection and identification of fish, macroinvertebrates and mollusks
  • Experience operating boats and field equipment

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of biological sampling, general plant and animal ecology
  • Extensive knowledge of biological communities, e.g. fish and wildlife taxonomy, fish health, macroinvertebrate taxonomy, wetlands systems, threatened and endangered species, etc.
  • Knowledge of environmental regulations related to power generation and wildlife, aquatic and plant life
  • Must understand the importance of working safely and ensure that safety is the number one priority
  • Must demonstrate behaviors consistent with Southern Company culture (safety first, unquestionable trust, superior performance and total commitment) including a commitment to compliance with state and federal regulatory requirements
  • Must possess good verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be able to prioritize and perform multiple assignments independently and as part of a team
  • Must be able to work in a physically demanding environment (hot/cold, rough terrain, in and around water, etc.)
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including overnight travel, weekends and non-traditional hours with limited supervision
  • Proficient in data entry, analysis and report writing
