Installs, tests, troubleshoots, maintains and analyzes the performance of protection and control equipment, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems and associated communication devices while providing leadership and guidance to other technicians to ensure proper operation of system protection relaying schemes and SCADA systems to eliminate or limit damage, prevent the spread of system disturbances, reduce the number and duration of customer outages, and to minimize the probability of an ultimate cascading electrical system blackout.
Key Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Installs protection and control facilities, modifies designs as needed, tests and calibrates protection and SCADA equipment, and provides direction for the technical aspects of substation construction projects in transmission switching stations, load serving substations, generation switchyards, and interconnection facilities with other companies to insure that the appropriate protection and control facilities are installed safely without adversely affecting electric service.
- Assists in developing testing plans and tests and maintains protective relaying equipment, relaying schemes, associated communication equipment, and SCADA systems to insure that protection and control facilities operate as designed and to insure system integrity and the reliable and secure operation of the ERCOT bulk power transmission grid and the power delivery system.
- Monitors and analyzes the performance of the protection and control system, analyzes digital fault recorder information, investigates questionable operations, troubleshoots and repairs the protection and control system, and recommends programmatic solutions as needed to insure system integrity and the reliable and secure operation of the ERCOT bulk power transmission grid and the power delivery system.
- Develops written procedures for use by P&C Technicians and craft personnel to help insure that construction and maintenance activities are conducted safely without unnecessary system exposure, customer interruption, or facility interruption.
- Assists in providing technical direction to the transmission work center in areas such as system operations, breaker and regulator control systems, system fault analysis and fault location, and mobile equipment installation to help insure the safe reliable operation of the transmission system.
- Provides technical direction and performs emergency protection system modifications and high voltage switching to restore electrical service without unsafely exposing the electrical system.
