Description
The survey specialist is responsible for performing survey functions in support of the Alabama Power Company Transmission operational needs. Extensive travel is required throughout Alabama Power Company's service territory.
MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Effectively working with survey field crews throughout the Alabama Power service territory while performing a variety of surveys (Boundary, Topographic, Centerline, Easement, etc.)
- Ability to operate survey equipment (total stations, data collectors, G.P.S. equipment)
- Ability to perform survey calculations
- Assist crews with the completion of all assigned tasks including cutting and clearing brush, undergrowth and debris for required access
- Assist crew members with using, caring for and moving equipment
- Research and gather data (deeds, plats original survey notes, etc.)
- Ability to effectively communicate with supervision, crew members, property owners, company employees and clients.
- Ensure that the work is completed in a manner that which meets or excels all applicable quality standards and legal.
- Ensure the most cost-effective use of labor, material, supplies and equipment on assigned survey projects.
- Lead personnel and maintain equipment to safely and effectively perform all survey-related tasks normally encountered.
- Developing practical surveying solutions for unique measurement applications.
- Ability to develop the necessary skills to function as a survey field crew leader. A field crew leader is responsible for leading and directing survey personnel (APC employees and contract workers)
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education & Experience
- 4-year Geomatics' (Survey) Degree, preferred
- Alabama Professional Land Surveyor's License or ability to obtain license within 5 years is required
- Extensive knowledge and experience of survey calculations, required
- DOT certification or ability to obtain, required
- Experience in leading survey crew(s), preferred
- Experience in survey data collection required, survey data processing preferred
- Experience in GPS data collection required, GPS data processing preferred
- Survey related CAD drafting experience, preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of the operation, setup, care and use of surveying tools and equipment, including electronic equipment and accessories.
- Knowledge of surveying procedures for a variety of survey types
- Extensive knowledge of survey calculations
- Knowledge of field electronic data collection and processing
- Knowledge of proper GPS procedures, data acquisition and data processing
- Knowledgeable of Alabama's "Standards of Practice" for surveying
- Knowledgeable of Alabama's Public Land Survey System (U.S. System of Rectangular Surveys).
- Ability to research and understand land rights and legal documents
- Experience in driving trucks, boats, and A.T.V.'s.
- Proficiency in Computer Aided Drafting
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Products
- Possess and demonstrate problem solving (trouble shooting) skills
- Necessary skills to adapt to rapidly changing circumstances while working on multiple tasks/projects and ability to be productive, decisive and efficient in periods of short time constraints and resource limitations.
