Description
We are currently seeking to fill several summer student positions in the Energy Trading team for 4-month terms between May and August. This team, based in Calgary, Alberta, is focused on trading and scheduling power and natural gas throughout North America, and is responsible for making proprietary trades to generate margin on behalf of TransAlta. These positions will report directly into the front-line trading and marketing group.
Responsibilities:
- Support the trading, analytics and marketing desks by completing analysis, modeling, and projects to assist with the achievement of energy trading objectives.
- Major projects will be focused on assisting trading, risk management, asset optimization and customer business through the completion of ad hoc analysis, business cases, and presentations
- Work with large data sets to investigate and analyze opportunities and make recommendations to trade floor teams
- Develop and maintain functional understanding of markets, customers, trading points and strategies working alongside the trade floor analysts and traders
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree with a major in an analytical field such as: economics, finance, engineering, mathematics, statistics, physics or computer science
- Prior work experience obtained through internship, coop or summer jobs is an asset
- Excellent Microsoft Excel skills required
- MATLAB or Python skills required
- Possess a self-starter results-oriented approach to work
- Proven ability to manage and prioritize multiple work tasks
- Demonstrates a positive attitude and a willingness to learn and take initiative
- Exhibits a strong ability to solve problems
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Able to work equally well either within a team or independently with minimal supervision
- A desire to learn TransAlta's business
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
